    (Job #) Diving Safety Officer, Assistant Diving Safety Officer, Salary Range: $5,097 - 9,225 monthly. Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,097 - 5,351 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the School of Applied Health. This position comes with a premium benefits package that includes outstanding vacation, medical, dental, and vision plans, life insurance, voluntary pre-tax health and dependent care reimbursement accounts, a fee waiver education program, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and 14 paid holidays per year.     Position Summary:

    The Cal Poly Humboldt Assistant Diving Safety Officer (ADSO) is to assist the Diving Safety Officer (DSO) in overseeing all diving activities done under any university auspices and is responsible to the Cal Poly Humboldt Diving Control Board. The ADSO is responsible for assisting in the safe execution of university diving activities within the guidelines set forth in the Cal Poly Humboldt Diving Safety Manual, and in accordance with CSU Chancellor's office policy, state and federal regulations.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Maintain and service university diving equipment, including regulators, buoyancy compensators, cylinders, emergency equipment, conduct air testing on university breathing gas compressors.
    • Assist as needed with academic courses in classroom, confined water, and open water.
    • Assist with maintaining diver record files.
    • Serve on the Diving Control Board.
    • Assist with field research operations logistics, including trips on the RV North Wind as needed.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
    • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.
    • Advanced training and experience in low visibility, high turbulence, and cold-water diving conditions. Comprehensive knowledge of diving theory and its application to safe diving practices, procedures and techniques related to academic, technical and scientific diving. Thorough knowledge of contemporary diving equipment, air compressors, air filters and purification systems, and safety devices to include their operation, repair and routine maintenance. Thorough knowledge of the California state and federal regulations regarding diving. Thorough knowledge of equipment used in scientific diving. Ability to demonstrate and train persons in the proper techniques and use of equipment for diving. Ability to plan and conduct difficult and complex academic, technical and scientific diving activities. Ability to develop safety approaches for training and for diving. Ability to establish effective and cooperative relationships with administrators, faculty, staff and students. Ability to analyze situations and take effective action especially in safety and emergency situations. Ability to speak and write effectively.
    • Knowledge of Northern California coast diving locations suitable for training.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Five years as a certified diver, of which at least three must be as a certified diving instructor through an internationally recognized training agency. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Special Qualifications: Possession of a current and valid diving instructor’s certification issued by an internationally recognized agency. Certification as an active AAUS scientific diver. First Aid, CPR, Oxygen Provider certification or equivalent. Advanced training and experience in low visibility, high turbulence, and cold-water diving conditions.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • AAUS Scientific Diving Instructor
    • Practical knowledge of the operation and handling of small boats as related to diving and diving safety procedures. Working knowledge of small boat navigational principles and related operation skills.
    • Certified Visual Inspector for high pressure cylinders.
    • Trained in scuba equipment service and repair
    • Mixed gas blender
    • Diving First Aid instructor
    • Licensed boat captain
