    Job Description

    This position will be located at Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site, 312 Dawson Rd, New Madrid MO 63869. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a half hour unpaid lunch break.

    • This is skilled work in facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction and repair of buildings, woodworking, routine cleaning of structures, maintenance/repair of equipment and the operation of Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site and Towosahgy State Historic Site.
    • Repair and maintain historic 1860’s mansion using period correct materials and techniques. Understand the concept of historic preservation and importance of protecting and preserving the historic fabric of original buildings and furnishings.
    • Direct and perform facility maintenance and upkeep according to facility plans, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, grounds keeping, buildings and structures maintenance, infrastructure and tree trimming.
    • Lead or participate in construction projects or facility repairs including woodworking, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry work. Research, estimate, acquire bids and/or purchase materials for specific projects or repairs as needed, following procurement rules and procedures.
    • Assist with stewardship of resources, both natural and cultural. Participate in controlled burns, invasive plant removal and other resource management related projects.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of park rules, regulations, procedures and policies. Attend mandatory and other trainings including overnight stays to learn new or enhance existing skills.
    • Dress in 1860’s period clothing for special events and occasional riverboat tours. Assist with decorating the house for Christmas Candlelight Open House. Assist with other special events, occasionally outside of regular working hours.
    • Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work in possible inclement weather such as being able to walk on unstable grounds, rugged terrain, lift & load 50- 75 pound objects repeatedly, walk on and work on roofs, operate equipment for extended time frames and climb ladders.
    • Basic computer skills for timekeeping and report tracking.
    • Perform other related work as assigned to further Site, Division and Department goals.


    • This position may be required to obtain and maintain water/wastewater certifications, and/or other required licenses/certification. If required and if you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given twelve months to obtain necessary license/certification.

    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Carpentry/Woodworking : Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct, install, finish, or repair wooden objects or structures.
    • Building and Construction : Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools to construct objects, structures and buildings.
    • Self-Management : Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals: displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
    • Attention to Detail : Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.


    Equivalent to those typically gained by:

    • Four to six years of on-the-job training in building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements:

    • A valid vehicle operator’s license is required.
    • Must complete Level 1 prescribed fire training within 12 months of employment.
    • Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work in extreme or inclement weather conditions, able to stand or walk on uneven terrain for extended periods, lift, carry and load up to 50 pounds repeatedly, bend stoop, crawl and work on elevated surfaces, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, backpack blowers, climb ladders.
    • Must be able to work some evenings and holidays if need arises.
