    This recruitment is only open to current San Bernardino County, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, or Special Districts employees who hold a regular, contract, extra-help, recurrent, Public Service Employee, WEX, or intern position. Former PSE, WEX, or interns are eligible to apply up to 6 months from the end of their assignment.

    The Office of the Public Defender is recruiting for Supervising Deputy Public Defenders who manage the operations and supervise staff within a branch office.

    The Office of the Public Defender provides representation, skilled legal counsel and courtroom advocacy for indigent defendants at all critical phases of state level criminal and civil commitment litigation.

    Supervising Deputy Public Defenders direct the administration of criminal cases processed by their assigned branch; participate in hiring, disciplinary, and personnel actions; train and evaluate the work performance of trial attorneys; supervise and direct the preparation, presentation and appeal of cases; and maintain court calendars.

    PUBLIC DEFENDER'S OFFICE

    The Law Offices of the Public Defender San Bernardino County is a county department that is staffed with attorneys licensed by the State Bar of California. The attorneys who handle cases in court are called Deputy Public Defenders. In addition to attorneys, the Public Defender employs Investigators to fully investigate cases handled by the Department. The Department also has a staff of social workers and support staff to provide the best representation for clients.

    The Public Defender will be appointed to represent any criminal or civil commitment defendant who cannot afford to hire an attorney, unless the office has a legal conflict of interest with that defendant’s case. The Public Defender represents adults and juveniles charged with misdemeanor or felony crimes, and persons facing involuntary civil commitment for mental disorders or commitment under the Sexually Violent Predator statute.

    The Law Offices of the Public Defender San Bernardino County is a leader in innovation, developing and implementing programs to operate more efficiently and improving individual lives. Using a holistic approach, the Public Defender seeks to increase client opportunities for achieving self-sufficiency. In addition to providing legal defense, our agency also seeks to arrange client access to social service programs and assistance with receiving alcohol and drug rehabilitation services and counseling for mental health issues.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Assignment: Assignments may be made at any location throughout the County depending on the needs of the department.

    Pre-Employment: Applicants must successfully pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting, prior to appointment

    Travel: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.

    State Bar
    : Those hired must be active members in good standing with the State Bar of California. This status must be maintained in order to remain employed in this classification.

    Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    Minimum Requirements

    License: Must be active members of the California State Bar.

    Experience: Must possess five (5)years of criminal trial experience as a defense attorney, including one (1) year of experience as a Deputy Public Defender IV in San Bernardino County.

    Note: Must be currently employed and hold regular status as a Deputy Public Defender IV or Deputy Public Defender V with San Bernardino County Public Defender's Office.
