    Introduction

    The Hospital

    San Joaquin General Hospital (SJGH), originally established in 1857, is a general acute care facility providing a full range of inpatient services including General Medical/Surgical Care, High-Risk Obstetrics and Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatrics and Intensive Care. In addition to the 196-bed hospital, the medical campus includes multiple facilities dedicated to comprehensive outpatient services including Primary Care and Specialty Clinics. The Hospital's Ambulatory Care sites, including offices located at French Camp and Stockton provide over 1,340,000 outpatient clinic visits a year.

    In addition to providing direct medical services, the hospital is active in providing education for health professionals through post-graduate residency programs in General Surgery, Internal Medicine and Family Practice and has trained over 3,000 physicians since the residency programs were established in 1932. The hospital also participates in clinical affiliation agreements for training programs in a variety of health professions including Registered and Licensed Vocational nurses, Pharmacists, Radiology Technologies, Social Workers and Respiratory Therapists.

    Diagnostics Imaging Department

    San Joaquin General Hospital is a public hospital certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. The hospital Certified Stroke Program has achieved recognition by American Heart & Stroke Association and is recipient of the Gold Plus Award. SJGH’s provides comprehensive treatment for trauma patients as the designated Level III Trauma Center for San Joaquin County .

    The Diagnostics Imaging Department is comprised of seven specialties: Radiography, CT Scan, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Mammography and Interventional Radiology. We also sponsor a Radiologic Technology training program. Services are provided in a culturally sensitive, community-oriented, caring manner with the highest regard for patient confidentiality and customer service. The Imaging department strives to image gently, care completely, and teach effectively.

    Recruitment

    This recruitment is being conducted to fill multiple per diem vacancies in San Joaquin General Hospital's Radiology Department and to create a referral pool to fill future per diem vacancies.     ** Per Diem positions receive an additional 15% salary supplement in lieu of benefits.

    Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background: Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible has passed all pre-employment processes. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

    TYPICAL DUTIES

    *Prepares and positions patients for diagnostic x-ray films; determines the correct exposure factors on the basis of height, weight, portion of body involved and degree of penetration required; selects appropriate cones and screens to reduce secondary radiation and fogging; sets machine control and exposes the required number and type of film.

    *Assists Radiologist in fluoroscopic x-ray examinations; assembles equipment; measures and mixes barium and contrast media; maintains surveillance over patients, performs radiographs as necessary for the radiographic procedure.

    *May operate computerized tomography scanner; assists radiologist in performing special x-ray examinations such as angiography, arthrography, myelography, and other special procedures.

    *May prepare and position patients for sonographic imaging examinations; calibrates and adjusts equipment according to the area of body involved; takes appropriate films of each examination.

    *Records patient information, patient identification numbers, and number and type of views taken in-patient log; maintains records as required.

    *Demonstrates all procedures to students; monitors students; performance of procedures; corrects faulty techniques and explains appropriate methods.

    *Develops exposed film using automatic processors.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience : Eighteen months performing radiographic work.

    Substitution : Graduation from the San Joaquin General Hospital School of Radiologic Technology may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

    Licenses and Certificates : Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and certification by the Department of Health, State of California , as a Radiologic Technologist.

    Note : Generally, persons who are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists may obtain certification as a Radiologic Technologist in the state of California upon applications and payment of fees to the state Department of Health.

    Special Requirements : Possession of a State of California Certification in mammography or a State of California fluoroscopy permit may be required as a condition for assignment or continued assignment as a Radiologic Technologist II.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Methods and techniques of diagnostic radiography; various anatomical positions used in radiography; and care and use of radiographic equipment; safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation.

    ABILITY

    Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, manual dexterity sufficient to administer procedures and operate equipment; bend, stoop and lift patients; position patients for a variety of imaging examinations; understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions in exact detail; demonstrate the operation of x-ray equipment in practical work situations; perform minor interventional x-ray procedures; maintain records; establish and maintain effective relationships with medical staff, patients and patients families.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility -Frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for long periods of time, walking, pushing/pulling, and operation of heavy equipment; occasional sitting for long periods of time and stair climbing; Frequency of Lifting -Constant lifting of 5 lbs. or less; frequent restraining, lifting/turning heavy objects or people; occasional lifting of 5 to above 70 lbs.; Visual Requirements -Constant need for overall vision, hand/eye coordination and reading/close up work; frequent need for color perception, depth perception and field of vision; Dexterity -Constant holding, reaching and grasping; frequent writing; Hearing/Talking -Constant hearing of normal speech and talking in person; frequent hearing on the telephone/radio and talking on the radio; occasional hearing of faint sounds; Emotional/Psychological Factors -Constant public contact, decision making, concentration and working alone; frequent exposure to hazardous materials, trauma, grief and death; occasional weekend/night work and overtime/travel; Environmental Conditions -Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.

    Selection Procedures
