    CORRECTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES - 20% RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION BOUNS

    The County of Los Angeles is currently offering up to 20% bonus for full-time Psychiatric Technician I position hired by Correctional Health Services and working on-site in a designated facility to meet critical healthcare needs for the uniquely underserved jail population.

    ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES:

In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Assists professional staff members in the delivery of mental health services or the delivery of indirect and direct patient care to clients who are mentally ill or emotionally disturbed.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Applies principles of mental health in relationships with mentally ill or emotionally disturbed clients as a member of a Psychiatric Mobile Response Team, Clinical Behavioral Management Response Team, crisis intervention team or therapeutic team at an outpatient or inpatient facility .
    • Observes, evaluates, records and reports to professional staff significant changes in the client's condition.
    • Provides direct and indirect patient care including helping clients with personal hygiene such as bathing and personal grooming.
    • Records measures of the client's physical condition such as pulse, temperature, respiration, weight , and body mass index .
    • Aids or restrains clients to prevent injury to themselves or others .
    • Prepares appropriate forms in connection with emergency calls, evaluation of the client's condition, and maintenance of the client's records.
    • Assists professional staff members in providing and documenting occupational , recreational and vocational therapy programs related to the client's treatment plan .
    • Administers, either orally or by injection , prescribed medications to clients in acute psychiatric settings .
    • Signs the application for immediate 72-hour detention of disturbed psychiatric clients if Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) designated by the Office of Medical Director as may be needed.


    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    A valid and active license* as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.

    LICENSE(S) INFORMATION:
    A valid and active license as a Psychiatric Technician i ssued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians .

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Required license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted, or your application will not be accepted. Additionally, in order to receive credit for license(s) and/or certification(s) in relation to any desirable qualifications, the license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted.

    The original license(s) must be presented during the selection process prior to final appointment.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    4 - Arduous.: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:

    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and desirable qualifications based upon application information and supplemental questionnaire responses, weighted 100%

    Candidates must meet the Minimum Requirement and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:

    Additional points will be awarded for post license experience assisting in the delivery of psychiatric services to emotionally disturbed or mentally ill clients.

    Applicants claiming experience in a state other than California must provide their Psychiatric Technician License from that state with their application in order to receive credit.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis.
    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
    Applicants who are successful in this examination and are added to the eligible register may not apply for and compete in this examination for twelve (12) months following the date of being placed on the eligible register. Applications received before expiration from the eligible register will be rejected.

    Applicants who have applied and did not meet the Requirements at the time of filing may reapply 30 days from their latest application date.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH.

    Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job-related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK AT ANY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY AND TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

    APPOINTEES WILL BE IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH INMATE PATIENTS IN A JAIL ENVIRONMENT PROVIDING SERVICES TO INMATE PATIENTS.
