    Essential Job Functions

    A Construction Inspector is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: inspects permitted activities in the public and flood control district rights of way to ensure compliance with the permit and approved plans; inspects permitted activities to ensure proper restoration of existing improvements; interprets engineered construction plans; reports variances and documents inspections; responds to inquiries and complaints from the public; performs continuous inspection on one or more projects; identifies, reports, resolves minor issues impacting assigned project; ensures approved materials are received and correctly implanted within the project; coordinates testing of materials when necessary; performs calculations from the plans verifying locations, grades and depth of utilities within the project; identifies non-compliant work and takes appropriate action to bring back into compliance; ensures all changes and/or modifications are noted on the final plans; has general knowledge of code requirements; makes photographic documentation of the progression of the assigned project; has basic understanding and use of computers including programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook; documents and maintains thorough, accurate and informative daily, weekly, monthly and final reports; maintains dialog, coordination and communication with other departments, external agencies and the public; understands CALOSHA worksite safety requirements; uses department equipment and safety attire in accordance to all rules and regulations; thoroughly reviews plans and specifications and reports any discrepancies to supervisor; immediately reports critical issues and/or possible delays to supervisor; ensures any required permits have been obtained and are being followed; completes monthly payment report and submits change order requests when warranted; attends all safety meetings and assigned training classes; and drives to and from assigned projects and complies with all departmental driving policies.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    One year of experience in the supervision or inspection of engineering construction work* including reading and interpreting complex construction blueprints and making calculations therefrom.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    License Information: All successful applicants for this position will be subject to driving record verification before being appointed. Driver License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO (2) YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    *Engineering construction work is defined as: horizontal construction including infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, flood control facilities, utilities, and other engineering structures.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of two parts:

    Part I: A qualifying written test covering basic mathematics, reading comprehension, and the ability to read and interpret complex construction blueprints. Only candidates who achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the written test will proceed to Part II of the examination.

    THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    Part II: An interview weighted 100% will evaluate experience, personal fitness and general ability to perform the duties of the position.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    Final results will be sent by U.S. postal mail. Test scores cannot be disclosed over the phone.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION
    FINGERPRINTING AND SECURITY CLEARANCE:

    Before a final appointment is made to this position, candidates are subject to security clearance which includes fingerprinting. An individual may be withheld from appointment, if he/she has a conviction record incompatible with the essential duties of the position for which he/she has applied. Any false statement or omission of material fact may cause forfeiture of employment rights. Information presented on employment applications, resumes and during the examination process is subject to verification. Disqualifying factors may include but are not limited to: felony convictions, certain job-related misdemeanor convictions, certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (e.g., 4 or more moving violations within the past 2 years, failure to appear, at-fault accidents, and driving under the influence), illegal use of certain controlled substances and/or poor employment history.

    The County of Los Angeles is a Fair Chance employer.
