    THE POSITION

    Join our Ventura Fire Family! The City of Ventura is accepting applications for Lateral Firefighter-Paramedic.

    WHAT YOU’LL DO

    The Lateral Firefighter-Paramedic performs emergency medical services as a certified paramedic for an assigned engine company and performs various fire service duties including all hazards emergency response, ocean rescue, fire suppression, hazardous materials operations, station and equipment maintenance, fire prevention, public education and related duties. This position must work shifts, weekends and holidays.

    WHO YOU ARE

    As a seasoned Firefighter with at least one year full-time paid firefighting experience, you are registered as a Paramedic nationally or in the State of California. You are physically capable of performing all tasks required of a Firefighter including rigorous activities associated with emergency operations. You live within 150 miles of the City of Ventura.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO QUALIFY

    A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to one year of full-time firefighting experience with a comparable fire agency and possession of required license and certifications.

    Age: Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of application.

    Citizenship: Applicants must be United States citizens or show proof of applying for citizenship at least one year prior to application.

    Education: High School graduate or G.E.D. is required.

    Background Check: Applicants required to undergo a comprehensive background investigation.

    Physical: Must be physically capable of performing all tasks required of a Ventura Firefighter-Paramedic including rigorous activities associated with emergency operations, and meet California Department of Motor Vehicle visual acuity standards necessary to maintain required licenses. Fitness will initially be determined by possession of a Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) certificate, and ability to pass a medical evaluation.

    The following are required upon employment:
    • Possession of a current and valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
    • A current California Paramedic license (EMT-P) AND a current CPR certification.
    • A current and valid Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) certification OR Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP) must be maintained continuously while employed as a Trainee or Firefighter Paramedic.
    • A current and valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification must be maintained continuously while employed as a Trainee or Firefighter Paramedic.
    • Possession of Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) certificate.

    Incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain the following licenses:
    • A Ventura County Paramedic Level II certification. Employees must maintain a valid Level II certification as long as the department employs them in the Firefighter Paramedic classification.
    • A current and valid California Class C driver's license with a Firefighter endorsement.

    Employment Information:

    Right to Work : Before employment, candidates must submit documentation verifying legal right to work in the United States.

    Background Check : A pre-employment verification of background, references, and medical examination will be conducted. A drug screening may be required for some positions. Applicants for positions using City vehicles may be required to submit a DMV report.

    Probationary Period : Twelve months

    Deferred Compensation: The City will contribute up to $168 per year in a 457 Plan.

    Medical/Dental Insurance: Up to $1,006 monthly towards a selection of plans. Medical and dental insurance is effective the first of the second month after date of hire.

    Optional Benefits: $513 monthly, which may be applied toward medical insurance premiums. Cash-out option is not available.

    Vision Insurance: City paid coverage for employees and their dependents. Vision insurance is effective the first of the second month after date of hire.

    Life Insurance: City paid $10,000 term life insurance for employees.

    Retirement: Employees are covered by the CalPERS retirement system. If you are a CalPERS retiree, please contact CalPERS to discuss the impact that employment in this position would have on your pension benefit.

    Tier I - 3% @ 55/Single Highest Year of Compensation Period for Classic CalPERS members who were hired prior to January 01, 2013, or who worked for the City prior to January 01, 2013 and are returning to City employment. Employees make a 4.5% member contribution and 4.5% of the employer's share, and may be subject to compensation limits per Section 401(a)(17) of the IRC. The City will contribute 4.5% of the member contribution and report the value to CalPERS as pensionable income.

    Tier II - 2.7% @ 57/Highest Three Consecutive Years of Compensation for employees hired on or after January 01, 2013 who are considered, "New Members." Employees will pay an 11.5% member contribution in accordance with Government Code Section 7522.30, and are subject to compensation limits per Government Code Section 7522.10. Additional details regarding the City's retirement plan will be provided to candidates during the job offer process.

    Social Security: CalPERS members do not participate in Social Security so there is no payroll deduction. Receiving a CalPERS benefit may affect your Social Security upon retirement. For further information contact a Social Security office or www.socialsecurity.gov/form1945 .

    Medicare: Employees participate only in the Medicare portion of Social Security. There is a 1.45% payroll deduction for this benefit.

    Vacation: 4.70 hours accrued semi-monthly, increasing to 9.33 hours semi-monthly after 15 years. Employees may use vacation after successful completion of probation.

    Holidays: 134.4 hours per year (11.2 hours per month.).

    Sick Leave: 5.60 hours accrued semi-monthly.

    Tuition Reimbursement: $2,500 per year for tuition and books for courses taken at accredited institutions after completion of probationary period.

    Student Loan Forgiveness: The City currently qualifies as an eligible employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

    Direct Deposit: Paychecks are automatically deposited to employee accounts.

    Uniform Allowance: $485 per year.

    Wellness Program: A comprehensive program is available, including on-site gym, exercise classes, downtown/beach walking routes, weight loss, and tips on nutrition and healthy lifestyle.

LinkedIn Learning online classes are available with a library of more than 13,000 courses taught by real-world experts.
