    ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES:
    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation.     Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    MISSION:
    To advance the health of our patients and our communities by providing extraordinary care.

    DEFINITION:
    Provides professional social work services to patients and families presenting difficult and complex medical and related psycho-social problems; or, in addition to providing direct patient services, has responsibility for the social work activities of a small social work unit in a community ambulatory care or managed care setting.

    Essential Job Functions

    Interviews and evaluates patients and family members to identify social, emotional, and economic factors which may interfere with obtaining maximum benefits from medical care.

    Develops and documents biopsychosocial assessments and formulates diagnoses and treatment plans based upon evaluation of the patient's past, present and future medical and socioeconomic functioning.

    Provides consultation services to multi-disciplinary team members by evaluating the environmental and psychosocial implications of the patient's illness when the team is assessing and planning medical treatment.

    Provides orientation and gives instructions to multi-disciplinary health staff to further their understanding of the social worker's role in the treatment process.

    Develops and implements psychosocial therapy modalities for patients utilizing a variety of therapeutic methods and techniques.

    Confers with representatives of other departments and private agencies to resolve problems and to develop and maintain public understanding and sound working relationships.

    Participates in social work student affiliate programs for training professional social work students through case assignments and technical instructions.

    Develops and utilizes resources of public and private agencies and community organizations to meet the needs of the patients.

    Develops and conduct in-service training and staff development programs for social work staff.

    Attends in-service training programs, continuing professional education, seminars and workshops to keep abreast of new trends and techniques used in social work practice.

    Submits recommendations for charge to current social work services programs and procedures.

    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
    A Master's Degree in Social Work from a graduate school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education followed by two years of clinical social work experience*.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Additional points will be awarded for experience in excess of the Selection Requirements.
    LICENSE:
    A valid and active license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences.

    All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted.

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Physical Class II - Light:
    This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    *Clinical social work experience in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Provides professional clinical social work services to patients and families presenting difficult medical and related psychosocial problems in hospitals, clinics, and community ambulatory health care settings.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience, and desirable qualifications based on application information, weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination to be added to the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:

    Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
