    About the Position

    PLEASE NOTE: Please note, this is a full-time, temporary position through July 31, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment. Additionally, this is a 10/12 pay plan position - the incumbent will work 10 months out of the year (August - May) with the salary spread over 12 months.

    The Equipment Technician is assigned to oversee and be responsible for the Music Equipment office. The Music Equipment Office equipment technician is responsible for the repair, maintenance, issuance, movement, set-up, storage, and inventory control of musical instruments, equipment, and accessories for the Department of Music as well as other University departments, University offices, and private parties using property assigned to the Music Department.

    Responsibilities

    Organize and Maintain Musical Instruments, Equipment, and Accessories:
    • Manage storage and provide secure storage facilities for musical instruments, equipment, and accessories.
    • Maintain inventory control and records of property assigned to the Department of Music.
    • Maintain and update catalogs and files on musical instruments, equipment, accessories, repair supplies, their vendors, and materials dealing with their repair.
    • Issue musical instruments, equipment, accessories, instructional aids, and miscellaneous items to students, faculty, University departments, and offices, and private parties.
    • Lead and supervise the repair of musical instruments, equipment, and accessories, including coordinating servicing by outside technicians.

    Coordinate reimbursed accounts:
    • Produce an annual budget.
    • Arrange billing for and income from the rental of musical instruments, equipment, and accessories.
    • Coordinate purchases of musical instruments, equipment, and accessories.
    • Coordinate purchases of repair tools, supplies, and equipment.
    • Coordinate rental of outside facilities and musical equipment.
    • Serve as a liaison between contractors and offices of Accounting, Procurement, and Support Services.

    General Support Services:
    • Manage movement and set-up of musical instruments, equipment, and accessories for the Department of Music.
    • Arrange with Facilities Management for moves involving musical instruments, equipment, and accessories to and from the Music/Business Building.
    • Maintain records of property assigned to the Department of Music.
    • Identify Music Department property and inscribe property with identifying information.
    • Conduct periodic inventories of Department of Music property and investigate missing or stolen property.

    Supervise Piano Maintenance:
    • Coordinate contracted piano technicians.
    • Review the status of each piano in the Department of Music inventory regularly with contracted piano technicians to determine appropriate servicing.
    • Schedule routine classroom, office, and practice room piano tunings.
    • Schedule tunings for performances presented by the Department of Music, other University departments and offices, and private parties.

    Supervise Live Audio and Video Recordings:
    • Lead and supervise a team of student assistants, including (1) one audio technician and (2) two stage managers, during music department concerts and events.
    • Train student assistants in their respective roles and responsibilities.
    • Ensure proper recording of music department concerts and events.
    • Coordinate with faculty and staff to meet technical requirements for live events.

    Other Duties as Assigned:
    • Advise faculty regarding technical problems pertaining to musical instruments, equipment, and accessories.
    • Provide access to Department of Music facilities for University personnel, students, and private parties.
    • Train student assistants.
    • Issue supplies to the Department of Music Faculty and Staff.
    • Assist in maintaining general security and safety within the Music/Business Building.
    • Serve as Building Safety Assistant.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge and Abilities:
    • General knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in the repair, maintenance, and installation of the common types of the specialized equipment in the assigned instructional program(s); general knowledge of testing apparatus.
    • Ability to use hand tools in repair, analysis, installation, or fabrication of equipment of the specialty to which assigned.
    • Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine necessary repairs.
    • Ability to follow plans; ability to follow oral and written directions.
    • Ability to keep simple work and inventory records.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
    • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
    • Ability to make arithmetic computations where required.
    • Possess specialized knowledge and ability pertinent to the individual position.
    • The ability to train and supervise others.

    Experience:
    • Equivalent to (1) one year of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category requiring construction and fabrication skills and some precision work, trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials, or specialized knowledge and skill related to unusual equipment.

    OR
    • Equivalent to (2) two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for the required experience.

    OR
    • Equivalent to (2) two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for the required experience.

    Knowledges and Abilities:
    • Strong organizational abilities.
    • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
    • Dynamic and proactive attitude.
    • Familiarity with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
    • Ability to evaluate materials and supplies.
    • Ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on equipment.

    Physical Requirements
    • Must be able to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.
    • Comfort with exposure to loud noises.
    • Has regular contact with hazardous materials.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Basic carpentry or mechanical skills are a plus.
    • Equivalent to (2) two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.
    • Basic knowledge of musical instruments and equipment care.

    Condition(s) of Employment

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
