    POSITION SUMMARY

    An employee in this class is responsible for the inspection; maintenance; servicing; fabrication; overhaul; and repair of water pumps and filters, motors, and various pieces of equipment used in the operation of the Parks and Recreation Department and other closely related activities. Work is performed independently but may be inspected while in progress or under completion by a supervisor.

    This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.     • Repairs, services, and maintains engines and small equipment employed in the operation, stationary and portable water pumps, power generators, power vacuums and sweepers, athletic field striping, and marking equipment
    • Performs steel fabrication of parts and equipment, trailer and frame construction, and modification of equipment
    • Operates and cares for hand and power tools, and equipment used in maintaining, fabricating, and repairing parts for machinery and equipment
    • Disburses fuel and oil and maintains an inventory of parts
    • Purchases, stocks, and distributes consumable supplies
    • Assist with Parks Bond projects
    • Performs related work as required


    JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Have successfully graduated from high school or trade school or possess a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized institutionPossess at least two (2) years paid work experience in mechanical maintenance and repair of small engines, pumps, filters and equipment. As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

    PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift, stoop, bend, crouch, climb and kneel in performing a variety of job-related tasks.

    HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION

    Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.

    An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form ( J-204 ).

    This position shall remain open until a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.
