The Nevada County is looking for a multifaceted Custodian for our Facilities Department! Our Custodian maintains assigned facilities in a clean, sanitary, and neat condition in accordance with occupational, safety, and health standards; and performs related work as required. The Custodian plays a vital role in keeping our facilities clean and safe for the staff and our community.

Typical duties include the following:
  • Maintains basic building security; unlocks facility doors/office doors; closes facilities after use; raises flag
  • Cleans resilient and carpeted floor coverings utilizing vacuums, mops, scrubbers, waxers, buffers and other equipment
  • Cleans, dusts, and polishes furniture, woodwork and cabinets; cleans stairways, hallways, restrooms, offices, lobbies, ceilings, walls, window coverings, light and bathroom fixtures, glass doors, windows and interior glass partitions; empties and cleans waste receptacles
  • Assists in moving and arranging furniture; sets up facilities for special uses; assists other department employees (i.e. plumbers, electricians, carpenters) in small repair jobs
  • Refills lavatory supply dispensers; stocks and collects money from dispensers; replaces light bulbs and tubes
  • Monitors supplies as needed
  • Sweeps areas adjacent to buildings; inspects work areas and reports needed repairs and maintenance
  • Cleans and maintains hand tools and electric equipment
  • Performs the removal of snow and ice from walkways using snow shovels and/or snow blowers
Skill in:
  • Mixing and using cleaning products and related chemicals
  • Operating various types of electric commercial floor vacuums, strippers, and buffers
  • Listening and communicating in a tactful manner when dealing with customers
  • Climbing ladders to change burned out ceiling light bulbs
  • Driving a vehicle
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Strength, mobility and stamina to work on feet throughout a shift performing physical labor, and to lift, carry, operate and maneuver janitorial equipment, supplies and waste containers weighing up to 60 pounds; mobility to bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist and reach when cleaning or operating equipment; manual dexterity to operate hand and power cleaning tools and equipment; vision sufficient to monitor work progress; speech and hearing to receive and relay basic instructions.
  • Working in exposure to contaminated surfaces and chemicals used in custodial work. Working in exposure to temperature extremes and inclement weather. Some accommodations may be made for some physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodations.

Dental & Vision Insurance
Nevada County employees can opt to receive dental and vision insurance without opting for health insurance coverage as well. This will give employees more flexibility to match their choice of insurance plans to their specific needs. Delta Dental is the dental provider offered through Nevada County and VSP Vision Care is our vision care provider.

Retirement
The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.

Tier 3 (Hired by first CalPERS employer on or after 1/1/13 or having a break in service of more than six months between another CalPERS employer and Nevada County) 2%@62
