    Job Summary

    The Freshman Focus Team Career Counselor supports the career development needs of Cal Poly's first time first-year students through tailored career education programming, career counseling, outreach, and other relevant resources and services.

    Department Summary

    Career Services is a centralized career center supporting the career development needs of all Cal Poly students and the recruiting needs of employers who want to hire Cal Poly students and graduates. The department's mission is to empower Cal Poly students to achieve a lifetime of meaningful career success. The Career Services team strives to achieve this by enacting the department's core values of innovation; collaboration; personal and professional growth; and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    Key Qualifications
    • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters.
    • General knowledge of career or academic counseling and advising.
    • Ability to successfully interact with a diverse student population and to assess student needs.
    • Strong and inclusive communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to speak and present information to small and large groups of people. Able to revise written material used for promotions, presentations, workshops, and marketing.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, faculty, staff, students and student organizations. Able to work effectively in teams.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.

    Education and Experience

    Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.

    A master’s degree, by date of hire, in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

    Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

    Salary and Benefits

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $58,092 - $63,441 per year

    Classification Range: $55,320 - $78,672 Per Year
