Do you have an extensive knowledge of Environmental Health rules and regulations, and are you looking for a career with excellent benefits? If so, the Food, Institution and Sanitation Section of Wake County Environmental Health & Safety Division would like to meet you!

This is an opportunity to combine customer service skills, science knowledge, and a love of public health to serve the citizens and visitors of Wake County. You will be able to use your skillset to ensure that restaurants and other establishments meet sanitation/safety standards using education, conflict resolution, and enforcement strategies. Education of external and internal stakeholders during inspections and consultative visits will be a highly valued component of your work.

Primary duties include:
  • Perform inspection of food, lodging, and institutional facilities required by state rules and regulations
  • Conduct foodborne and communicable disease outbreak investigations
  • May inspect swimming pools and tattoo facilities
  • Performs emergency response and complaint investigations
  • Educate the general public concerning environmental and public health issues

**Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5:15pm, some nights, weekends, holidays**

The Wake County Environmental Health and Safety Division's mission is to reduce public health and safety risks to citizens and visitors of Wake County through efficient and effective plan review, audits, and education. Wake County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation with a population of over 1 million. The Food Lodging Institution Section won the Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award in 2016.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and
    Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); OR Bachelor's or postgraduate degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences; OR Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in public health
  • Three years of experience in environmental health or related field
  • NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist
  • Four NCDHHS authorizations (Food Lodging Institutions; Pools; Child Care Centers and Public, Private and Religious Schools; Tattoos)
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
