Summary

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Solid Waste Department is responsible for the proper management of solid waste generated in Deschutes County. The Department operates Knott Landfill and four rural transfer stations where the public, contractors and waste collection companies deliver waste for disposal at Knott Landfill in Bend.

ABOUT THE JOB:

As a Landfill Site Attendant, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the safe and efficient operation of what is considered one of the best landfill operations in the State of Oregon. Landfill Site Attendants work directly with our customers assessing and collecting fees, monitoring customer safety and assisting in control of customer movement in a busy environment. Our Landfill Site Attendants are the primary contact that the community has with the Department and the impressions from that interaction reflect on the quality of our operations and the positive customer experience.

Knott Landfill and our rural transfer stations are a dynamic work environment where conditions often change throughout the work day. Landfill Site Attendants work a 4 day/10 hour schedule. While individual employee work schedules vary due to the nature of our facility operating schedules, all employees get at least 2 days in a row off during their work week. Must be able to work additional hours and a flexible schedule when needed, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, to meet the needs of the department and emergencies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide customer service to direct and assist the public in utilizing waste and recycling disposal sites; answer questions regarding procedures, fees, recycling, etc., enforce policies and procedures with customers, and provide directions to disposal areas.
  • Collect fees in a professional manner; issue receipts; accurately enter and verify data into appropriate computer system, maintain related paperwork.
  • Provide customer traffic control to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Maintain worksite in a clean, organized manner; including disposal areas, pick up litter on site as needed.

  • Payment/Cash handling/cashiering.

Compensation

$3,794.28 to $4,842.60 per month for a 173.33 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent;
  • AND one (1) year of customer service experience, including data entry and payment processing;
  • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications :
  • Experience in cashiering in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in basic computer entry skills.
  • Experience in direct interaction with public.


Necessary Special Requirements

Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

Must have the ability to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.

Work Environment
  • Work is performed while operating vehicles, getting in/out of vehicles, walking on uneven terrain, sometimes in adverse conditions. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly, 50 pounds occasionally. Stand for long periods of time and work on feet while outdoors.
