    Assistant Director

    Department of Public Works, Fleet Services

    General Description and Classification Standards
    The Assistant Director of Fleet Services provides leadership in the day-to-day management and operations of the City’s fleet maintenance program. This role ensures that vehicles and equipment are maintained to meet operational demands while promoting best practices, safety, and innovation within the Fleet Services department. The Assistant Director leads technical and administrative staff, ensuring optimal performance, adherence to safety regulations, and implementation of modern vehicle maintenance techniques.

    Supervision Received
    • Works independently under broad direction from the office of Fleet Services. The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing multiple functions within fleet maintenance and provides technical guidance to staff.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    • Provides leadership to administrative and mechanic personnel, ensuring the effective operation of the Fleet Services department.
    • Offers advanced technical expertise and support in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment, including light-duty trucks, heavy equipment, emergency vehicles, and specialty equipment.
    • Develops and enforces internal procedures to ensure vehicles are properly maintained, and safety standards are strictly followed.
    • Collaborates with senior leadership to develop and implement strategies for vehicle maintenance, ensuring compliance with industry standards and environmental regulations.
    • Leads the implementation of new technologies, equipment, and processes to enhance vehicle diagnostics and repair efficiency.
    • Ensures compliance with safety protocols in the maintenance shop, including the proper handling of tools, hazardous materials, and protective equipment.
    • Provides training and professional development opportunities to staff, ensuring the team is well-versed in modern vehicle maintenance techniques and safety practices.
    • Inspects and evaluates vehicle conditions, determining repair needs and ensuring high standards of work are maintained.
    • Coordinates with other departments and vendors to ensure seamless operations, timely parts delivery, and efficient vehicle repairs.

    Decision Making
    • Makes technical and operational decisions regarding vehicle maintenance and repairs. Provides recommendations for equipment upgrades, staffing needs, and process improvements.

    Leadership Provided
    • Provides leadership over a team of administrative and mechanic personnel. Mentors and coaches staff on technical skills, best practices, and safety standards, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Extensive knowledge of vehicle systems, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computer-based systems.
    • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to motivate and guide technical staff toward operational goals.
    • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, repair equipment, and fleet management software.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair guides.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to document repairs and communicate effectively with team members and other departments.
    • Ability to identify and implement solutions for vehicle maintenance challenges and stay current with evolving vehicle technologies.


    Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in automotive technology, business/public administration, or a related field (Additional years of experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis) .
    • 5 -7 years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, with a focus on diagnostics, troubleshooting, and operational management.
    • 3-5 years of experience in a supervisory or management role in a fleet maintenance environment.

    Preferred Education & Experience
    • Experience working with government or municipal fleets is highly desirable.

    Licensures and Certifications
    • ASE Certification preferred.
    • CAFM - certified automotive fleet manager preferred.
    • Other relevant automotive or leadership certifications are a plus.

    Essential Capabilities and Work Environment
    • Must be able to perform physical tasks, including lifting and working in various environmental conditions typical of a fleet maintenance shop. Must be capable of working with tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment in a hands-on role.
