    Job Summary:

    Under the direction of a commanding officer, the Sergeant is assigned primary responsibility as a working, first line supervisor, in addition to general law enforcement and specialized work assignments performed by Police Officers and Corporals. Work assignments require the use of independent judgment and the ability to provide leadership to others. The Sergeant rank is distinguished from the Corporal by the full-time assignment of supervisory duties, including making work assignments, monitoring and reporting work activities, and providing on the job training and assistance to subordinates.

    Duties and responsibilities
    • Supervision: Supervise assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel through an on scene presence. Review and approve clear and comprehensive written reports and documents. Receive input from members of the campus community, etc. Function as on-duty Watch Commander. Responsible for supervising all departmental field activities during an assigned shift.
    • General Law Enforcement: Enforce laws, rules and regulations; act as a team leader on criminal investigations and other incidents; make arrests; conduct interviews; transport prisoners; testify in court proceedings as required. Patrol the campus and surrounding areas on foot or using motor vehicles. Investigate traffic collisions and other problems; issue citations; provide safety escorts; respond to radio calls and other duties as assigned. Write reports to accurately describe events; draft diagrams of locations or scenes. Respond to situations involving illness or injury; provide first aid or emergency medical care or assessment at the level of training provided to the employee.
    • Training: Provide on the job training, development, and evaluation to assigned staff and oversee training conducted by others. This includes general oversight of Field Trainees on an assigned shift, and coordination with Field Training Officers involved. Conduct roll-call training at beginning of each shift. Conduct safety training and monitor workplace conditions for safety hazards.
    • Administrative: Various departmental assignments, including planning and scheduling, assignments to represent the department at meetings, on committees and task forces.
    • Other classification related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy and a Basic Course Certificate.
    • Three or more years of active law enforcement experience.
    • Completion of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.
    • Possess valid California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Basic POST certificate (Must provide POST proof of “POST eligibility” number in accordance with SB 2 and SB 960, complaint with California Government Code 1029 & 1031, prior to employment).

    Required Qualifications:
    • This classification is the highest level in the Police Series and is a first line supervisory classification, requiring a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures.
    • Work assignments include primary supervisory responsibility for a shift, program, unit or task force, and general law enforcement and specialized work assignments performed by other positions in this series.
    • Incumbents require graduation from a P.O.S.T. academy, a Basic Course Certificate, and four or more years of active law enforcement experience.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of current crime prevention techniques.
    • Ability to supervise other officers and make decisions that are legally and constitutionally correct.
    • Ability to give oral presentation in front of diverse groups of individuals and represent the Department in a positive manner.
    • Ability to foster positive relationships with the campus community.
    • Ability to provide effective leadership, training and direction to assigned personnel. Ability to maintain accurate time records and prepare statistical reports.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelors Degree.
    • Minimum (2) years of prior supervisory experience in the form of formal supervisor position, team leader, or acting supervisory roles is preferred.
    • Possession of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Certificate or the ability to obtain within one (1) years of appointment.
    • Possession of a P.O.S.T Intermediate Certificate. Advanced P.O.S.T is highly desirable.

    Special Conditions:
    • Incumbent must be able to operate emergency vehicle, firearms, computer, telephone, mobile phone, two-way radio and impact weapons.

    License/Certification:
    Peace Officers in this classification must be or have:
    • Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
    • Valid California drivers license.


    Compensation and Benefits:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,393 - $8,878 per month

    Classification Hiring Range: $6,429 - $10,904 per month

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Position Information:

    Full-time, Non-Exempt, Probationary

    Academic year schedule: 3/12 shifts with 8hr shift every other week. Work schedule consists of shift work including nights, weekends and holidays.

    Conditions of Employment

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Drivers License Check

    Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

    Physical Exam

    Employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

    Mandated Reporter

    The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
