    THE POSITION

    NON-CAREER PART-TIME/SEASONAL

    On a part-time basis, supervise and participate in the leadership and/or monitoring of a variety of recreation activities, special events, and human service programs related to older adults and older adults with memory loss.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Employees in this classification are non-career. Incumbents can work up to 1040 hours per year. This classification differs from a Recreation Aide, Older Adults in that the Senior Recreation Aide has the responsibility for supervising Recreation Aides. The Senior Recreation Aide, Older Services is distinguished from the Senior Recreation Aide classification in that the former leads and monitors programs geared toward older adults and older adults with memory loss.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

    General supervision is provided by a higher-level position. Responsibilities include the direct supervision of Recreation Aides and/or other lower level City positions.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed.
    • Supervise the work of Recreation Aides or other lower level staff.
    • Assist in the planning of programs and activities offered.
    • Lead and/or monitor various programs specifically designed for older adults and older adults with memory loss, including but not limited to, congregate meals programs, human service programs, exercise programs and/or arts and crafts programs.
    • Assist older adults with personal care and mobility issues.
    • Ensure the safety of participants by monitoring for wandering and other behaviors related to memory loss.
    • Answer the phone and serve customers 50 years of age or older at a public counter.
    • Promote neighborhood and community recreation events specifically for older adults and those with memory loss.
    • Perform a variety of tasks necessary to the daily functioning including, but not limited to: facility reservations, compiling data for statistical purposes, maintaining inventory records and operating computers and other office equipment.
    • Open and close recreational facilities; monitor facility use; prepare and set up facilities for recreational or community use.
    • Monitor various program operations.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:
    • Supervisory techniques and practices
    • Basic first aid and safety practices.
    Ability to:
    • Supervise, train and assign staff.
    • Work with an older adult population, including those with memory loss and/or those who are frail.
    • Read, write, and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
    • Lead a variety of recreation and group activities designed for older adults and older adults with memory loss.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    Education:
    None required.

    Experience:
    Six months of full-time experience comparable to a Recreation Aide with the City of Sacramento.
    Or
    Six months of full-time experience working with older adults in a health care, home care, or recreational setting.

    Substitution:
    Completion of six (6) semester units from an accredited college or university in gerontology, recreation, or related field may substitute for the required experience.

    PROOF OF EDUCATION

    Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

    An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

    SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
    For elder-care positions, candidates must meet qualifications in accordance with current laws and regulations.

    Age:
    Must be at least 18 years old by time of appointment.

    Assessments:
    If considered for appointment, candidates must:
    • Pass a criminal background check.
    • Pass a medical exam and tuberculosis screening test.

    Training:
    This position is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; completion of Mandatory Reporter training is required within two weeks of employment.

    Physical Demands and Work Conditions:
    The conditions herein are typically required of an incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

    Physical Requirements:
    This is an active position requiring the ability to move about on foot, with frequent walking and standing; frequent starts and stops; perform simple and power grasping; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with participants and staff; visual acuity to read and record documents and make observations; intermittently, lift, carry or move equipment of 35 pounds or less; ability to assist with the transfer of participants including, but not limited to, wheelchair.

    Environmental Conditions:
    Work is performed primarily indoors and includes contact with human biological hazards when assisting participants with restroom care.

    Work Conditions:
    May be required to work evenings and weekends.
