    The Position

    Environmental Health Specialists are responsible for conducting drug licensing investigations; label review, sampling and inspection of drug and cosmetic manufacturing plants; inspection of dairies and milk processing plants; certification of septic systems; inspection of food warehouses, traditional food and drink establishments, health facilities, public institutions and other related facilities to ensure compliance with State laws and regulations.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.

    The Division of Public and Behavioral Health: Environmental Health is hiring for an Environmental Health Specialist 4 in Reno, NV. This position is the Supervisor for the Environmental Health Section (EHS): Incumbents act as a full supervisor to Environmental Health Specialists I, II and III; rating and survey officers; and administrative assistants by assigning and reviewing work, providing training and technical advice, preparing work performance standards, evaluating performance, and initiating disciplinary action. Incumbents report to a Program Manager and work is reviewed through completed reports and consultations. EHS provides regulatory oversight for food establishments, individual sewage disposal systems, public bathing places, public accommodations, schools, jails, state institutions, camping and recreational vehicle parks, temporary mass gatherings, drug and cosmetic manufacturing, labor camps and shellfish distribution. EHS is contracted to perform sanitary inspections at FDA registered facilities throughout the state.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Licensure as an Environmental Health Specialist and five years of experience performing professional environmental health duties for a regulatory environmental health agency; OR two years of experience as an Environmental Health Specialist III in Nevada State service. Special Notes Any person licensed as an Environmental Health Specialist is another state of by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) must obtain and maintain certification of registration by the Nevada State Board within six months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
