    Position Summary

    Looking for a dynamic role where your expertise in biosafety can make a significant impact? Join us as a Biosafety Officer (BSO) and be a key player in advancing our biosafety programs and cutting-edge research.

    Your Role: Under the guidance of the Senior Director of the Environmental Health and Safety department, you’ll develop, implement, and maintain vital programs and procedures that support our Biosafety Program. You’ll be an essential member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC). Your expertise will provide invaluable compliance guidance and technical consultation to a diverse group of stakeholders, including Principal Investigators, Students, Laboratory Staff, and more.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Lead and collaborate with the Division of Research and Innovation on planning new research initiatives.
    • Review research protocols, conduct risk assessments, and implement risk mitigation strategies.
    • Perform inspections, audits, and investigations, ensuring top-notch safety standards.
    • Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs tailored to our needs.
    • Represent the EHS department on various campus-wide committees.
    • Serve as a member of the campus emergency response team, ready to make a difference when it matters most.

    In addition, you’ll support other critical areas like laboratory safety and environmental health.

    Position Information
    • Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
    • Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
    • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
    • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego

    Department Summary

    The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure and human resources at San Diego State University.

    The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for development and implementation of programs aimed at protecting the campus community and providing compliance with numerous federal, state and local regulatory statutes. This department reports to the Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs.

    The department consists of (16) full time staff members consisting of (14) Administrators (MPP)/Program Managers, two (2) Administrative Analysts and an Office Manager. The department may employ part time student assistants.

    Education and Experience

    Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

    Licenses and/or Certifications

    Valid California Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

    Key Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in life sciences, biological sciences, or a related discipline is preferred.
    • Experience in biosafety and other general health and safety disciplines, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
    • Experience in a research lab setting.
    • Knowledge and skill working with infectious agents, cell culture, and recombinant DNA techniques.
    • Working knowledge of biological safety standards such as the Blood Borne Pathogen Standard, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, and the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules.
    • Proficiency and skill in database management, word processing, and spreadsheets using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $7,750 per month.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,537 - $10,014 per month.
