    Join the City of Palo Alto's Parks Department Team!

    The City of Palo Alto is home to nearly 4,000 acres of stunning P arks and Open Spaces , offering endless opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and exploration. Our Parks Department team plays a vital role in maintaining 162 acres of beautifully developed urban parks, ranging from cozy neighborhood spots to expansive community favorites like Rinconada, Mitchell, and Greer Park.

    In addition to our parks, the Parks Department team ensures the upkeep of vital public spaces, including libraries, community centers, business districts, and utility sub-stations. Our maintenance programs cover a wide range of services: caring for landscape plant materials, managing irrigation systems and turf, maintaining sports fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, dog parks, basketball courts, and even a lawn bowling green.

    Parks Department is also proud to maintain athletic fields and tennis courts across all elementary and middle school sites, ensuring our community’s recreational spaces are always ready to be enjoyed.

    Schedule: 9/80 M-F (off 1st Fridays)

    Essential Duties:

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Installs new sprinkling systems by layout from blueprints, lays and fits plastic, galvanized or copper pipes, and wires control devices when system is electrically activated.
    • Makes repair to existing sprinkling system by replacing damaged or worn pipe, sprinkler head or defective control device.
    • Maintains preventive maintenance schedule on irrigation systems.
    • Maintains records of work performed and systems installed.
    • Adjusts sprinkler heads as required to maintain proper watering patterns.
    • Installs and repairs drinking fountains.
    • Related Functions:
    • May perform work of a lower classification when not performing the duties so mentioned above.
    • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
    • High school graduate or GED preferred.
    • Two years experience and training in plumbing, working with plastic, galvanized and copper pipes.
    Desired:
    • Experience in installing, using and maintaining hydraulic and electric irrigation systems (including heads, valves and controllers).
    Special Requirements:
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
