    Introduction

    The Facilities Maintenance Technician classification performs quality skilled work in the maintenance, repair, carpentry, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices and other city facilities. Ideal candidates will possess skilled carpentry experience.

    Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $33.23/hour.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
    • Five years of relevant work experience, such as experience in residential or commercial construction.
    • Preferred:
      • Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program in at least one of the building/construction trades.
      • Experience at a journey level.

    Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
    • Possess or obtain an OSHA-Class III Asbestos worker certification within one year of hire or promotion and pass a pulmonary health assessment and fit test for a half / full face respirator.
    • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.

    Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/service assignment.

    Essential Functions

    Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

    • Performs rough carpentry tasks such as: framing walls, roofs, partitions, installing/repairing doors/windows and frames, wood trim, siding, suspended ceilings, mortising doors/jambs for lock/ hinge placement, and repairing/building/installing shelves-cabinets and other miscellaneous items.
    • Performs roof maintenance functions including roof cleaning and inspections, repairing splits, punctures, flashing, penetration search, roof drains on all types of roof systems including: metal, asphalt shingle, TPO, SPF, modified bitumen and clay/concrete tile.
    • Performs painting, staining, finishing and coating operations on a variety of surfaces that include, but not limited to interior/exterior of buildings, roofs, doors/windows, cabinets and furniture. These operations may require sanding, cleaning, cover or removing graffiti, caulking, scraping, power washing, paint/stain/finish matching and applying the paint/stain or finish with rollers, brushes or spray equipment.
    • Installs or repairs a variety of wall coverings that include, but not limited to; (ceramic, glass and porcelain) tile, (metal, wood, laminate, vinyl, FRP and solid surface) panels or sheeting
    • Installs or repairs drywall which includes patching, installing, taping and texturing the finish product.
    • Repairs, services, and adjusts all types of doors, such as hollow metal and aluminum storefront doors.
    • Performs other requests such as constructing, repairing and/or installing miscellaneous interior office systems/items.
    • Serves as Competent Person (as defined per OSHA) being capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings, or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees or self, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.


    Work Environment/Physical Demands

    • Work alternate schedule that will include: holidays, weekends, and evenings on regular scheduled assigned times.
    • Participates in rotating paid standby schedule for after-hours response to include weeknights, weekends and holidays.
    • Make precise arm-hand positioning movements and maintains static arm-hand position to operate tools, such as electric hand drills, power hand saws, or radial arm saws.
    • Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism, such as operating levers or pedals.
    • Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects, such as assembling bolts, washers, collar units and inserting them in a small hole.
    • Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform maintenance and repair operations which require climbing and working on ladders, scaffolding and/or power lifts up to 20 feet.
    • Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time, such as laying brick, block or tile.
    • Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
    • Work in small, cramped areas.
    • Move objects weighing over fifty (50) pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
    • Mix or work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using appropriate protective equipment.
    • The primary duties of this class are performed in a public building environment that may include working on rooftops and in adverse weather conditions. Will need to endure prolonged exposure to the elements, i.e. sun and heat exposure.
    • Operate a motor vehicle and travel to/from various locations.
