    Description:

    Join the City of Palo Alto as a General Laborer (H) and be a vital part of our team responsible for maintaining our city’s infrastructure! We’re looking for hardworking individuals to help with the construction and upkeep of streets, sidewalks, and storm drains.

    This position involves performing a variety of general manual tasks that require knowledge of tools, equipment, and procedures related to the placement and finishing of hot asphalt, pouring wet concrete, and installing underground storm drainpipes. The individual will work under general supervision, following pre-established instructions from supervisors, while effectively communicating important information both verbally and in writing.

    This is an SEIU Hourly (limited-benefits) position that is budgeted to not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The number of hours per week and schedule will be determined based on assignment.

    Essential Duties:

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Perform manual labor for the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and storm drains.
    • Utilize tools and equipment for tasks such as placing hot asphalt, pouring concrete, and laying storm drainpipes.
    • Follow instructions from supervisors to ensure efficient and accurate task completion.
    • Communicate relevant information to supervisors both verbally and in writing.
    • Exercise limited independent judgment as expected of an apprentice helper-level laborer.
    • Report to different leads daily based on assigned tasks.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
    • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent.
    • One (1) year of g eneral construction and maintenance experience in concrete, asphalt, or underground.
    Special Requirements:
    • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

    Work is performed indoors and outdoors; exposure will occur to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, vehicular traffic, electrical energy and voltage, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; will work at heights on scaffolding and ladder; will work around construction and operating equipment; will have frequent exposure to hazardous activities including electricity and heights.

    Require physical ability and mobility to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weight; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles; verbally communicate to exchange information.

    Medical Stipend
    $3.80 effectivethe pay period including July 1, 2024.
