    Tenure-Track Faculty Position

    College of Arts and Letters

    Position :

    Department of Music

    Assistant Professor of Music - Director of Bands

    Starting Date :

    January, 2025

    Minimum Qualifications :

    1) An earned DMA or Ph.D. in Music, Conducting, or a closely-related area with a specialization in wind band conducting from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (01/17/2025).

    2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

    3) Demonstrated record of experience conducting wind band repertoire at the collegiate or professional level.

    Preferred Qualifications :

    1) Evidence of programming, teaching, and/or conducting:
    New and contemporary repertoire Repertoire that reflects diverse musical traditions Music of underrepresented composers Music utilizing non-traditional techniques
    2) Demonstrated record of experience conducting and/or collaborating with orchestral programs to help create a full orchestral experience for students.

    3) Demonstrated experience in successful and collaborative student recruiting from a wide array of pools and approaches to benefit the department as a whole.

    4) Demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring students majoring in Music Education.

    5) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the graduate level.

    6) Evidence of work in and/or commitment to community engagement and social justice.

    Duties :

    The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

    The successful candidate will be an exceptional conductor and teacher with training in wind band conducting and pedagogy; in addition, professional or collegiate experience conducting or performing orchestral repertoire is desirable. Primary responsibilities will include directing the University Wind Ensemble; teaching and mentoring conducting students at the undergraduate and graduate level; and teaching additional courses contingent upon candidate’s expertise, interests, and department needs. They will actively collaborate with the other music areas to recruit students to the department as a whole. They will be expected to serve on performance juries and advise master’s thesis and undergraduate senior projects, as well as undergraduate and graduate recitals. The candidate will collaborate closely with the orchestra director/strings faculty and other faculty to support students performing in a variety of ensembles, venues, and types of performances; collaborate with other faculty as performing and/or composing musicians; and actively participate in the department’s vision to serve the community through workshops and outreach.

    Salary:

    Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience (anticipated hiring range: $81,432 - $83,460 annually).

    The Department:

Undergraduate students pursuing degrees in other fields may also declare music as a minor. Students may choose from an array of music courses to enrich their general education and cultural life experiences.     * A United States (US) Equivalency certification is required for earned/awarded/conferred foreign terminal degrees. The US Equivalency certification is used to validate foreign studies by an academic credential evaluation agency and is evaluated on foreign studies and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the United States. The certification must translate the information in English, and confirm that your highest terminal degree is US Equivalent to a US terminal degree (i.e., Master’s, Doctorate’s, Doctor’s of Philosophy).
