    Definition

    Come join the Newport Beach Police Department as a Police Crime Scene Investigator!

    Currently there is one full-time opening. This position will perform a variety of duties related to crime scene investigations, including but not limited to identifying, collecting, preserving and processing physical evidence at crime scenes, preparing reports, assisting in criminal investigations, and testifying in court.

    This recruitment will remain open on a continuous basis with the first review of applications on November 14, 2024 OR until 200 applications are received - whichever occurs first.     Selection Components:
    Application Evaluation: The most qualified candidates will be invited to a oral interview.
    Interview: C onducted in person and t entatively scheduled for December 11, 2024 . Passing candidates will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to begin the background process.


    Schedule:
    This position will work 10 hour shifts.

    The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement Systems (CalPERS). Retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 13% of pay toward the retirement benefit.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience: One year of experience in crime scene investigation and/or other law enforcement environment.

    Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. College level coursework in crime scene investigation, criminal justice, criminalistics, physical sciences or related college-level coursework from an accredited college is desirable.

    License or Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

    TOBACCO USE: Employees hired after January 1, 1999, shall not smoke or use any tobacco products at any time while on, or off, duty.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Record must be free from conviction of any felony, or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, and from an excessive number of citations for traffic violations. Background history should indicate responsibility, dependability, honesty, integrity, acceptable communication skills, good judgment and the ability to relate well with others.

The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
