    Summary

    Starting Salary: $19.63 - Depending on Qualifications

    The City of Waco Seeks
    Are you passionate about making a difference in community health? Do you possess the skills to engage with individuals, provide critical support, and promote health education? In this vital role, you will be at the forefront of public health efforts, conducting investigations and interventions, managing case services for patients, and building bridges between our community and vital health resources. Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) is expected to apply acquired knowledge and skills to critical elements of daily work in sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, including HIV.

    Position Overview:
    Under basic supervision, provides intervention and outreach services to persuade and educate Public Health District (PHD) clients and McLennan County Residents to complete actions required to prevent and mitigate communicable diseases.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Required:
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • 1 year of experience in social services or public health programs
    • Texas Driver's License
    • Specific technical certifications in public health may be required

    Essential Functions:
    • C ompletes investigations, interventions, may require blood draws for communicable disease testing, interviews and assessments of PHD patients; provides ongoing case management services, explains PHD programs and links patients to other social service and health care agencies; persuades and motivates clients to take proper actions; maintains patient records and database; evaluates client progress and lab tests and provides counseling support.
    • A ssists with community outreach and assistance programs; provides health education to clients and their families, social contacts and the community; documents outreach, intervention and client service delivery.
    • Manage inventory of supplies and equipment and performs office duties as needed.

    Governance and Organization

    Waco is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The City Council is comprised of a Mayor, elected at-large, and five City Council members representing single-member districts, all serving two-year terms. The City Council sets the tax rate, approves the budget, appoints members to City boards and commissions, enacts City ordinances, and appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Secretary, and the Municipal Court Judge.

    The City has a strong Financial Management Policy that guides the operation and delivery of quality City services, contributes to excellent AA+ and Aa1 bond ratings, and maintains an unassigned fund balance reserve in the General Fund equal to 28% of current year budgeted expenditures. The City of Waco has more than 1,600 employees and a total operating budget of over $400 million.

    The City provides a full range of municipal services including a regional airport, animal services, building inspections, code enforcement, convention and visitors bureau, emergency management, housing and community development, economic development, fire, public health, library, municipal court, parks and recreation, planning, police, public works, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum, utilities and zoo operations.
