    Pay Range: $59,984 - $77,979 annual compensation

    Workdays & Hours: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm; Some evening/weekend work required.

    The Environmental Services Department is seeking to hire an experienced Safety Training Specialist to provide technical support in coordinating, developing and implementing safety programs; provide specialized training and assessments to employees and department operations; preform safety training; and conduct accident investigations and inspections. The Safety Training Specialist is tasked with ensuring employees in the department are able to work in a safe and secure environment and oversee safety-related programs and training. Candidate should be a responsible, dependable, and extremely detail-oriented individual.

    A regular work schedule is Monday - Friday and must be able to work nights and weekends if or when needed.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, Business Administration, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a closely related field
    • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in developing and conducting training programs for educational and/or safety-related.
    • Valid Driver’s License

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Excel.
    • Safety certification (GSP, ASP, SSH, CSHO, SHEP or equivalent)
    • Experience with accident/incident investigations
    • Ability to know, understand, interpret and apply federal, state and local regulations

    The Safety Training Specialist job responsibilities include:
    • Acts as safety coordinator with responsibility for recommending safety policies and procedures; maintains safety records and files; ensures safety equipment is operating safely and effectively.
    • Plans and implements training for employees in worksite safety practices.
    • Assists, plans, and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and related organizations.
    • Knowledgeable of accident investigative techniques.
    • Oversees the Accident Review Board Committee to promote safety to reduce the number of accidents and incidents. Emphasis will be on training employees and developing safe procedures.
    • Performs safety surveys and inspections, prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
    • Conducts post-accident investigation and prepares reports identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by City employees and senior management.
    • Assists in the development, evaluation, and upgrading of safety programs for the department.
    • Interprets and explains health and safety policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; ensures compliance with policies and procedures for the department-wide safety training efforts.
    • Create a list of training throughout the year for the Department staff to comply with.
    • Write safety articles to be produced in the Department’s employee newsletter.

    Working Conditions

    Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

    Physical Demand

    Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.

    Medical Program

    The City offers two plan options through Meritain Health, an Aetna company.

Also, services are available at any one of the five satellite locations that serves employees across the city.

    • Preventative services are covered at 100% on both plans.

    Vacation

    Eligible for 3 weeks of vacation: After successful completion of probationary period (usually
    6 months), employees may take time off for rest, relaxation, vacation, illness, religious observances, and personal business.

    Holidays

    Available on the first day of employment, the city provides employees with paid holidays, including two personal holidays.

    Wellness Program

    The city’s Healthy Challenge Wellness Program rewards all full-time, benefit-eligible employees on the city’s health insurance. The Healthy Challenge Program utilizes a points system. Participants may earn points throughout the year (Jan. 1-Dec. 15) for completing specific program activities and participants can redeem points at the end of the year for a cash reward. By participating, individuals can earn $150, $200 or $250 by accumulating program points.
