    EQUIPMENT MECHANIC-IN-TRAINING / EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

    Regular Full-Time Employment Opportunity

    The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for one Equipment Mechanic-in-Training or Equipment Mechanic! Depending on the applicant qualifications, the position will be filled at the appropriate level/salary of either an Equipment Mechanic-in-Training or Equipment Mechanic.

    Under supervision of the Fleet Services Coordinator, performs a variety of routine, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of a variety of automobiles, trucks, fire trucks, light and heavy equipment, auxiliary power units and other City equipment; performs related work as required. Possession of a Class B drivers license is desirable.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Equipment Mechanic-in-Training is the entry-level classification for this job series. Initially incumbents perform assigned duties under immediate supervision, while learning related policies and procedures. Equipment Mechanic-in-Training is distinguished from the Equipment Mechanic classification by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the Equipment Mechanic. As experience is gained, there is a greater independence of action within established guidelines.

    Equipment Mechanic is an experienced journey-level classification in the series. Incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of duties associated with the repair and maintenance of vehicles under general supervision. Equipment Mechanic is distinguished from the higher-level Fleet Services Coordinator in that the latter is a first-line supervisor and responsible for overseeing the work of the Equipment Mechanics and Equipment Mechanics-in-Training and supports the administration of fleet maintenance operations. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Equipment Mechanic-in-Training level once the incumbent meets the qualification standards of the Equipment Mechanic level, demonstrates an ability to perform the full scope of work, and meets performance expectations. Incumbents are not automatically promoted to the higher level; the needs of the department determine the level of assignment.

    Essential Job Functions

    (May include, but are not limited to, the following):
    • Performs both major and minor repairs and preventive maintenance tasks including, hydraulic and air brake systems, engine and transmission problems, suspension and steering systems, preventive and prescriptive maintenance, drive train and differential component repairs and emission control devices.
    • Repairs and maintains a variety of automobiles, trucks, fire trucks, light and heavy equipment, auxiliary power units and other City equipment, including police and fire equipment, parks maintenance and public works equipment and maintenance vehicles.
    • Performs emergency road service on heavy equipment, such as street sweepers, chipper trucks, bucket trucks, fire apparatus and street repair equipment.
    • Repairs and overhauls powertrains, chassis and accessory components.
    • Tests, repairs and installs complex vehicle electronic components and wiring.
    • Repairs and replaces fuel systems and brake system components that include, but not limited to, machining drum and disc brake assemblies, tires, tubes, and valve stems.
    • Adjusts chains, belts and attachments on City vehicles and equipment.
    • Designs and fabricates modifications or additions according to the user's needs, using the appropriate materials and tools, such as machine shop tools, welders, oxy-acetylene torches, plasma cutters and abrasive blast units to complete assignments in a timely manner.
    • Maintains accurate information, logs, records and databases, as assigned.
    • May provide direction and training to assigned staff.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Position requires sitting, prolonged standing, walking, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination when using small hand tools and computer keyboards. Near vision is required when writing reports and other documents, and far vision is required when out in the field. Acute hearing is required when isolating mechanical sounds within an engine compartment and providing customer services over the phone and in person. The ability to lift, carry and push tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. The job duties may expose the employee to the outdoors, which may include exposure to inclement weather, noise, fumes, dust, grease, and air contaminants, including battery acid, brake fluid, antifreeze and Freon. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to work in heavy construction zones and traffic conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.

    Equipment Mechanic: The base salary for the Equipment Mechanic classification includes pay for potentially hazardous duties as listed in the essential job functions.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

    Equipment Mechanic-In-Training
    Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND

    Completion of a two-year automotive technology course of study from a technical institute/college or six months of hands-on mechanic experience in repairing light and/or heavy power driven equipment.

    Equipment Mechanic
    Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; AND

    Two years of experience as a mechanic-in-training with the City of Sunnyvale or two years of journey level experience in repairing light and/or heavy power driven equipment.

    Equipment Mechanic-In-Training

    Knowledge of:

    • Hydraulic, mechanical and electrical theory.
    • Principles, practices and methods involved in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
    • Electronic fuel, ignition and pollution control systems; lubrication methods and practices.
    • Basic diagnostic techniques.
    • Proper use and care of common hand, power and mechanical tools and vehicle lifting equipment, including their proper identification and application.
    • Safety regulations and precautions.
    • Office methods, procedures, software and equipment.
    • Safe use and operation of automotive and fleet maintenance tools and equipment.

    Ability to:

    • Learn the processes, procedures and operational techniques related to the Equipment Mechanic classification.
    • Make basic repairs and adjustments to vehicles and equipment.
    • Diagnose mechanical and electrical system component failures, differentiating between symptoms and problems.
    • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
    • Operate power tools and equipment and perform a variety of fleet maintenance tasks.
    • Operate electronic diagnostic testing equipment.
    • Maintain accurate records, logs, information and databases.
    • Read mechanical drawings, plans and specifications.
    • Operate a computer using word processing and business software and other office equipment.
    • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
    • Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties.
    • Establish and maintain and promote positive and effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and public.
    • Observe workplace rules and safety principles and work in a safe manner.

    Equipment Mechanic
    The above knowledge, plus:
    • Electronic fuel, ignition and pollution control systems, lubrication methods and practices.
    • Complex diagnostic techniques.
    • Safe use and operation of automotive and fleet maintenance tools and equipment.

    Equipment Mechanic
    The above abilities, plus:
    • Operate motor vehicles or motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Effectively use common hand, power and mechanical tools, parts and support equipment including their proper identification and application.
    • Make basic and complex repairs and adjustments to light and heavy equipment.
    • Diagnose mechanical and electrical system component failures.
    • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair mechanical systems, such as hydraulic and air brake systems, engine and transmission problems, suspension and steering systems.
    • Repair systems on heavy duty vehicles.
    • Diagnose electronic components by using schematics, repair manuals and service and repair information from compact discs, and by utilizing electronic test equipment.
    • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, plans and specifications.
    • Plan, organize and prioritize tasks and responsibilities in order to complete projects and reports in a timely manner.
    • Understand and follow complex written or verbal instructions and procedures.
    • Safely operate equipment and power tools.
    • Direct, train and assist with the evaluation of subordinate staff.

    Willingness to:

    • Perform on-call duty assignment and call-back work as required
    • Wear a uniform
    • Provide complete set of hand tools of the trade

    Licenses/Certificates:

    Equipment Mechanic-in-Training : Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.

    Equipment Mechanic : Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.

    Some positions in the Equipment Mechanic classification require possession and maintenance of a class A or B California driver's license and a safe driving record.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s) in automotive and/or truck repair.
    • State licenses for brake repair, pollution devices and lamp adjustment.
    • Experience with heavy equipment.

    Based upon a review of the application materials, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may consist of an oral examination scheduled for Tuesday , December 10, 2024 . (Note: The examination process may be changed as deemed necessary by the Director of Human Resources).


    SELECTION PROCESS
    Those candidates that receive a passing score on the examination will be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year, in accordance with the City's Civil Service Rules and Administrative Policies. Top candidates on the eligibility list will be invited to participate in a selection interview with the Department of Public Works tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, 2024 . Any candidate selected by the hiring department will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment process, which may consist of a comprehensive background investigation, as well as medical exam(s) administered by a City-selected physician(s) before hire. Prior to starting work, all newly-hired employees will be fingerprinted to check conviction history. A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment; however, failure to disclose conviction history will result in refusal of employment or termination.
