    Marine Firefighting Instructor

    5 Positions to be filled

    Part-Time (Temporary/Casual) Positions

    College Station, Texas

    $25.00/hour

    The Marine Firefighting Instructor assists with maritime fire and safety courses and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) fire training programs in a challenging adult learning education environment. Utilizes knowledge of adult learning theories and learning styles to maximize learner success and ensure overall effectiveness of the course instruction. Uses a variety of media to present course material, assists with the development of new and/or updating curriculum content as necessary, performs field-based skills training and/or may provide technical assistance in a specialty area. Maintains skills and a current knowledge base to meet current and future instructional requirements as well as adapt course curriculum, when necessary, to meet learner needs. As needed, completes required course reports and documentation, and coordinates with internal and external clients. Supports the Marine Program Training Coordinator with tasks and deliverables associated with classes.

    This position reports to the Marine Training Coordinator.

    Required Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Four years of experience in military damage control or as a professional firefighter.
    • One year of adult education and/or training experience.


    Required Licenses/Certifications:
    • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
    • NFPA 1001, NFPA 1081 or equivalent military damage control experience.
    • Ability to obtain certification from USCG, within 6 months of employment, for USCG approved TEEX courses.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
    • Ten or more years of experience in firefighting or the maritime industry with a background in fire suppression.
    • Three or more years of experience in adult education and/or training background in training concepts and programs.
    • NFPA 1041 Instructor I or equivalent.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens and heat.
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    • Regular use of standard office and presentation equipment such as computer, keyboard, printer and projector.
    • Ability to climb, crawl, stoop, reach and manipulate small equipment components during instruction.
    • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours/day.
    • Physical conditioning consistent with setting up classrooms, movement of light, moderate, and/or heavy training equipment and instructional materials.
    • Physical conditioning consistent with conducting hands-on firefighting training.
    • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Specific knowledge in firefighting and fire suppression strategies and tactics.
    • Ability to lead instruction and provide effective demonstration of hands-on training activities.
    • Excellent communication (oral/written) and presentation skills.
    • Knowledge of principals and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups.
    • Knowledge of media production, communication and dissemination techniques and methods.
    • Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies.
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and classroom management skills.
    • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
    • Ability to work effectively with customers, co-workers, and staff of all levels.
    • Ability to interact respectfully and professionally with customers, co-workers, and staff of all levels.
    • Working knowledge of basic office software, computers, and instructional programs.
    • Excellent small group facilitation and team building skills.
    • Ability to comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.


    Equipment:
    • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone
    • Training equipment.
    • Fire suppression equipment including firehose, nozzles and breathing apparatus.


    Notifications:
    • This position is security sensitive.
    • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
    • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.
    • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.
    • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.
    • This position is required to comply with OSHA/ NFPA standards, Emergency Services Training Institute (ESTI) guidelines related to the proper wearing of respirators and (ESTI) facial hair policy for wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when needed.


    Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

    Training Delivery and Program Support - 80%
    • Delivers course instruction and provides technical assistance for and ensures that the course is effectively and efficiently presented in accordance with TEEX certified curricula and customer contracts.
    • Ensure all training materials (equipment, props, curriculum, media and classroom) are prepared before class and secured at the completion of class.
    • Develops instructional techniques and uses a variety of learning techniques to accommodate different learning stylesfor presenting course material.
    • Facilitates class discussions, monitors performance, and ensures all participants have achieved terminal objectives of the course.
    • Facilitates after action reviews with participants at the completion of exercises.
    • Evaluates and assesses instructional effectiveness and adjusts delivery plan as necessary.
    • Submits all required reports for assigned course in a timely manner upon completion of the course.
    • Develops and maintains subject matter expertise to include current and emerging issues.


    Course Development and Review - 5%
    • Actively participates in researching and/or updating new instructional materials in support of Marine courses.
    • Assists with developing and/or updating customized lesson plans, outlines, training aids, manuals, and scenarios for practical application.
    • Assists with reviewing curriculum and/or instructional materials to ensure relevance to current doctrine and best practices.
    • May assist with developing and overseeing quality control of exercises/scenarios as applicable.
    • May assist with modifying or developing course content to meet changing needs and objectives, includes visuals and instructional materials to meet specific education and programmatic requirements.


    Training Documentation - 5%
    • Ensures class documentation is completed in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with Division guidance, Agency, and Contractual requirements (if applicable).
    • Maintains appropriate student activity documentation.
    • Completes all required course documents in a timely manner and participates in course debrief with instructional team, as applicable, to determine delivery areas of improvement.
    • Ensures course evaluations are collected and returned as instructed by Training Coordinator.
    • Assists in the marketing of Division programs and events to potential customers and/or students.


    Fiscal and Administrative Responsibilities - 5%
    • Makes sound fiscal decisions in the planning and execution of course deliveries.
    • Submits administrative paperwork to include timesheets and travel expenses/receipts within the required time frame per agency and division policy.


    Other Duties - 5%
    • Completes all required TAMUS required training and maintains required professional credentials.
    • Actively participates in team meetings and events.
    • Interacts professionally and wears appropriate professional attire representing the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in a positive manner.
    • Maintains and safeguards assigned divisional equipment and property.
    • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
