    Job Description

    The Specialty Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair of all Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX)/Emergency Services Training Institute (ESTI) fleet vehicles and equipment. Assists the supervisor with maintaining shop inventories, shop condition, record keeping, and parts orders. May assist other programs with training support as needed.

    This position reports to the Specialty Equipment Mechanic - Foreman.

    Required Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • One year of experience in maintenance or repair of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.


    Required Licenses/Certifications:
    • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Valid Class A CDL - Tanker, Passenger and Air brakes within the first 24 months of employment.
    • Ability to obtain a minimum of two ASE in-truck certifications within 18 months of employment.
    • Ability to obtain a Level 1 EVT certification within 18 months of employment.
    • Ability to obtain complete 24-hour welding class within 18 months of employment.
    • Ability to obtain complete listed out-sourced training within 6 months (as available):

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Any ASE certifications or Emergency Vehicle Repair certifications.
    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
    • Ability to follow instructions and communicate in English to perform job responsibilities.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.
    • Physical conditioning consistent with movement of heavy maintenance materials, training equipment, performing maintenance activities and/or construction activities to include standing, walking, sitting, climbing ladders or scaffolding, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting, reaching, talking, hearing, carrying, lifting, pushing/pulling maintenance tools and/or equipment.
    • Ability to travel independently by driving a vehicle to pick up supplies/materials from local vendors and to other campuses to perform work.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
    • Proficient computer skills to operate a PC with Microsoft Office 365 and a CMMS Work Order system.
    • Ability to positively and effectively interact with direct reports, students, vendors, customers, staff, and management.
    • Ability to drive pick-up truck with trailer.
    • Demonstrated safety awareness and safe working habits/practices.


    Equipment:
    • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.
    • Skid steer loader, forklift, material handler, man lift, backhoe.
    • Riding mowers, side-by-side ATV’s, golf carts and various types of vehicles.
    • Personal protective equipment.
    • Training equipment.


    Notifications:
    • This position is security sensitive.
    • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
    • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.
    • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.
    • As part of TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/HQ Department Head.
    • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.
    • This position requires compliance with OSHA/NFPA standards, ESTI Respirator Protection Program related to the proper wearing of respirator. Beards, sideburns or mustaches must not exceed 2” in length for PPE equipment. Shaving of the entire sealing surface area of your face will be required to allow for annual respirator fit testing as well as immediately upon being given assignment of a task requiring use of a respirator. The requirement to shave cannot be discharged and to request the task be assigned to a coworker or subordinate. Refusal to shave immediately upon the assignment of a task, that requires the use of a respirator will result in immediate disciplinary actions up to and including termination if deemed appropriate.
    • This position works Monday-Friday, 7:00a.m. to 3:30p.m. and may require work beyond normal work hours, but not limited to a flex-work schedule to accommodate training classes, meetings, and/or training schedules.
    • Employment in this role is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen, and will also be subject to random drug screening per DOT regulation.


    Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

    Field Support - 70%
    • Responsible for advanced inspections, diagnosis, maintenance, preventative maintenance, testing, and repair of all ESTI vehicles, trailers, equipment, utilized for field operational support in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.
    • Ensures that all repairs are logged and repairs are completed in a timely manner.
    • Submits vehicle/equipment status reports to requesting program.
    • Maintains a vehicle/equipment maintenance tracking database.
    • Maintains inventory/maintenance records, logs, mileage reports and assists director with accountability of equipment, materials, and replacement parts.
    • May be required to assist other programs as needed.


    Class Support - 15%
    • Responsible for advanced inspections, diagnosis, maintenance, preventative maintenance, testing, and repair of all ESTI vehicles, trailers, equipment, and fire apparatus utilized for course deliveries in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines.
    • Pre-positions equipment, including specialized equipment, necessary for class delivery and ensures it is operational and ready for use.
    • Assists with preparation/cleanup/restoration of training projects by securing the equipment in designated storage areas.
    • May assist instructional staff with training support such as fire pump operations and pump maintenance as needed.


    Divisional and Program Support-15%
    • Purchases supplies/equipment/materials in accordance with TAMUS/TEEX/ESTI regulations.
    • Provides all required purchasing receiving documentation.
    • Makes supplies/material runs to local vendors.
    • Attends weekly scheduled safety meetings.
    • Completes performance surveys as needed and participates in professional development opportunities.
    • Maintains obtained certifications/licenses for the duration of employment to include completion of required continuing education.
    • Assists with personnel and administrative tasks as assigned.
    • Assists with work order QA/QC as requested.
    • May be required to facilitate and/or attend meetings as requested.


    Other Duties:
    • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
