    About the Department

    The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, high-performance, “all hazard” fire department, responding to approximately 93,000 calls for service each year from 33 Fire Stations. SJFD’s service area includes a number of high-hazard occupancies, including an international airport; a general aviation reliever airport; five major hospitals (including two trauma centers, and five emergency departments); the SAP Center, home of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks (17,500 capacity); PayPal Park, home of MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes (18,000 capacity); San José State University (the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast) with a student population of 33,409; three super regional malls; approx.100 high-rise structures; and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

    Position Duties

    The San Jose Fire Department is currently recruiting to fill a Principal Account Clerk vacancy in the Bureau of Administrative Services.

    The Accounts Payable (AP) Principal Account Clerk will serve as the Fire Department’s primary oversite for the procurement card program that consists of regular and emergency users. In addition, this position is responsible for performing the review and reconciliation of all cardholder accounts. The Principal Account Clerk will also oversee payment processing for all department utilities. Other assigned duties will include special payment demand request, petty cash reconciliation, and refund requests.

    Please note that the position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.

    The salary range for the Principal Account Clerk classification is $73,070.40 - $88,940.80 annually. In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Principal Account Clerk classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

    Salary range(s) for this classification is/are:
    • $73,070.40 - $88,940.80 (pensionable)
    • $ 76,723.92- $ 93,387.84 ( including non-pensionable pay )


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (GED) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

    Experience: Three (3) years of accounting clerical experience, including one (1) year in the performance of reviewing and balancing ledgers, processing and reviewing revenues, payments, or requisitions, or serving as a timekeeper and processing payroll.

    Acceptable Substitutions: A bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

    Licenses or Certificates:Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.

    • Computer Skills - Experienced with common business computer applications including, but not limited to, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.
    • Customer Service - demonstrates ability to anticipate internal and external customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently in a timely, accurate, respectful and friendly manner.
    • Decision Making - Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions.
    • Flexibility - makes effective decisions and achieves desired results in the midst of major changes in responsibilities, work processes, timeframes, performance expectations, organizational culture, or work environment.

    • Reliability - Completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.
    • Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.
    • Supervision - Sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources; provides motivational support; empowers others; assigns decision-making and work functions to others in an appropriate manner to maximize organizational and individual effectiveness.

    Selection Process:
