    York County Solid Waste Collection & Recycling is actively seeking individuals to join our team. Solid Waste Collection & Recycling supports the operation of 16 Collection & Recycling Centers throughout the county by providing solid waste and recycling opportunities for York County residents, in an effort to meet the waste reduction and recycling goals set by the SC Solid Waste Management Policy Act. York County established the recycling program in 1993 and is recognized as one of the best in the state of South Carolina.

    About our opportunity

    We invite you to apply to join our team as a Collection & Recycling Center Attendant in the Solid Waste Collection and Recycling division. This is a temporary position that will fill in at the Collection & Recycling Center sites located throughout York County as needed. with the possibility of moving into a permanent part time position at a regular site. The purpose of this position is to provide guidance and assistance to the citizens delivering waste and recyclable materials to County Collection & Recycling Centers. Monitors container volumes and maintains site appearance and safety; and maintains accurate records.

    Projected Hiring Rate: $15.82 an hour.

    Work Schedule: This is an on-call position, that could eventually turn into a part timeposition. The Collection & Recycling Centers are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday, 7:00 am - 7:00 pm and shifts vary from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm, or 11:00 am - 5:00 pm on an as needed basis.

    Location: Must be able to travel to any of the 16 Collection and Recycling centers.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Coordinates the opening and closing of the centers and provide information and assistance to the general public.
    • Provides professional customer service to citizens; including answering citizen questions related to proper disposal and recycling, notifying citizens of upcoming special events or policy changes, and encouraging citizen participation in recycling.
    • Monitors and screens all waste and recyclable materials delivered by residents to centers and ensure materials are placed in appropriate containers.
    • Directs traffic at the centers as needed.
    • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records and logs of daily activities
    • Ensures the center and surrounding areas are clean and orderly. Removes trash and debris and cleans buildings as necessary.
    • Monitors two-way radios, provides assistance to callers and answers telephone calls as needed.
    • Assists with unloading recycle and household waste containers as requested.
    • Inspects, cleans and maintains assigned equipment and tools, and notify supervisor of necessary maintenance and repair needs.
    • Assists with other division and department functions as assigned.
    • Operates compactors, rakes, hoes, garden forks, hose pipes, hand sprayers, cleaning supplies, and additional hand tools.
    • Performs all duties in accordance with all County policies and procedures, standards of quality and safety, and all applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations.


    About you

    Education and Experience:
    • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.


    Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

    Physical Demands:
    Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
    • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

    Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.
    • Radiation; Disease/pathogens.

    Essential Safety Functions:

    Every manager/supervisor is responsible for enforcing all safety rules and regulations. In addition, they are responsible for ensuring that a safe work environment is maintained, safe work practices are followed, and employees are properly trained.

    Temporary employees: An employee who understands that he/she is hired for a limited period of time not to exceed six (6) calendar months, by agreement with the county and is not entitled to any county benefits. Exceptions to this policy must be recommended by the HR Director and approved by the County Manager based on a request from the department director.

    Annual Leave:Temporary employees do not accrue annual leave.
    Sick Leave:Temporary employees will not accrue sick leave time.
    Training:Quality training and educational programs are available at various times for county employees in order to support workforce development that is consistent with organizational objectives. Training topics may include driver training, CPR/first aid, communication, supervisor training, workplace violence, substance abuse, and various computer related classes.
