    The Public Works Department is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services . The Department is committed to high-quality service, partnering with the community, and providing an excellent environment in which to work.

    Position Duties

    Salary range for this classification is:

    Animal Services Officer: $32.27 - $39.24/hour

    This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be? determined ?by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.?

    The Department of Public Works is seeking to fill two (2) vacant Animal Services Officer . This position will be responsible for providing Animal Services and Animal Control duties as assigned. An Animal Services Officer enforces California State laws and local municipal codes governing the vaccination, licensing, restraint, impoundment, care, and quarantine of animals. Some of the typical duties include: driving an Animal Services vehicle, using a computer, impounding, and transporting sick, injured, dead, stray or owned animals; issuing warning notices and citations; educating the public on regulations and proper care and restraint of animals; quarantining biting animals; conducting investigations and inspections, preparing reports, and issuing permits.

    These positions will be required to work weekends, holidays, nights, rotating shifts, and respond to emergency Animal Services assignments during off-duty hours. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects (such as animals and equipment up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment. This position will be exposed to unpredictable working conditions including but not limited to loud noise levels, moving mechanical parts, inclement weather conditions, confined workspaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous physical substances, fumes, odors, gases, dust, and air contaminants, blood borne pathogens while using hypodermic needles on animals, and animal scratches and bites.

    Other duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

    • Experience handling and caring for animals humanely and safely, including aggressive animals.


    • Ability to identify the basic characteristics and behaviors of domestic animals


    • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully, both verbally and in writing, with staff and the public


    • Ability to exercise tact and good judgment in all interactions with the public and promote quality customer service


    • Ability to implement Division and Departmental protocols and procedures


    • Ability to present evidence and testify in a formal hearing in a court of law


    • Ability to create and maintain accurate records (handwritten and on computer)


    • Knowledge and comprehension of state and local laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the care, housing, treatment and impounding of animals


    • Valid certifications and trainings related to Animal Control and Services

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).

    Experience: None

    Desirable qualification: Previous law enforcement and/or professional animal care experience.

    Required Licensing:

    • Possess a valid State of California driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.


    • Incumbents are required to complete P.C. 832 (Level 1), and courses in the use of pepper spray and the use of a baton within one (1) year following employment.


    • Incumbents are required to complete Euthanasia By Injection training within one (1) year following employment.

    Problem Solving - Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue; determines the significance of problem; collects information; uses logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions to problems that achieve the desired outcome.

    Selection Process:

    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to all the job specific questions.
