    This position may be filled at one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities. The entry salary is posted above, with the intermediate starting salary of $66,634.32, and a senior starting salary of $71,964.96.

    The safety specialist provides entry-level professional support for safety programs and processes. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision.

    MoDOT will bring candidates onto the team as entry-level, intermediate, or senior level, based on your skills and experience. This opening is for one of our CAREER-LADDER positions which offers the opportunity for career advancement without having to participate in the competitive selection interview process. As you continue to learn, acquire new skills, and gain experience, you can be promoted to a higher-level position.

    • Conducts training on various safety training programs and policies. Performs quality assurance checks to ensure employees understand and are following the guidelines from the material presented at the time of training and later at job sites within the district.
    • Monitors safety of all employees by conducting hazards and risk assessments across the district by attending morning meetings, reviewing inspection records of equipment, conducting a job site safety analysis by reviewing of work zones, inspecting tools and equipment at the job sites, reviewing equipment staging/positioning, ensuring employees body positioning is correct for job tasks and facing traffic, making recommendations to minimize hazards and/or exposure.
    • Conducts detailed incident investigations for workplace incidents involving department employees to determine root cause through reviewing all training, procedures, and policies related to the incident, and presenting their findings and recommendations for improvement to the District Safety and Health Manager and the District Incident Review Team. This will include, but not limited to worker compensation cases, fleet incidents, various claims made by third party, and safety policy violations.
    • Being a part of a team by serving on various committees and is a resource for all employees. Assists with leading, training, and coaching employees to aid them in a path toward incident reduction.
    • Computer work within the MoDOT Management System (MMS) such as conducting and recording of observations/good catches/near misses, documenting work zone inspections, building inspections, and quality assurance reviews.


    • Bachelor's Degree: Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, or related field.


    Special Working Conditions:

    • Substitution of experience for education may be considered.
    • Job requires frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel.
    • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
    • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
