    DESCRIPTION

    THE DEPARTMENT
    The Office of the City Prosecutor is one of the busiest municipal prosecuting agencies in country, handling approximately 10,000 cases each year. The City Prosecutor's Office is also considered a national leader in innovative court diversion programs and community-based prosecution, giving it the distinction of being a model for other prosecuting agencies.     THE POSITION
    Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Supervising Prosecutor Assistant position is responsible for leading an awesome team of legal support staff in the Long Beach City Prosecutor's Office. This is an at-will, unclassified supervisory position located at Long Beach City Hall, 411 W. Ocean Blvd., 8th Floor, Long Beach, CA 90802. The position is 100% in person and onsite.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of support staff, ensuring efficient workflow and quality work product in alignment with organizational goals.
    • Design and implement comprehensive training programs for new and existing staff, fostering professional growth and enhancing team capabilities.
    • Performs a variety of prosecutor assistant tasks requiring independent judgment, accuracy and speed including, but not limited to, typing complaints and other criminal pleadings.
    • Provides hands-on support across various roles within the support staff duties during peak periods, ensuring continuity of operations while maintaining service quality.
    • Collaborates with management to ensure policies and procedures adhere to organizational policies and procedures and performance goals are met.
    • Manages staff scheduling and coverage of assignments.
    • Makes recommendations and proposed solutions to improve staff efficiency. Assists in recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of support staff.
    • Researches, analyzes, and provides reports relating to special projects.
    • Champions change management initiatives related to new technologies, workflow processes that leads to successful engagement of team members and ensures success.
    • Participates in the scheduling, planning and organizing of office workflow.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • At least three to five or more years of paid, full-time equivalent experience at the level of a legal secretary, legal assistant, or paralegal in a criminal justice agency or legal office or a closely related field;
    • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Knowledge of the criminal justice process and criminal filing procedures along with various law enforcement systems such as CLETS/DMV, CHHRS, Justice Partner Portal (JPP), etc.
    • Familiarity with legal terminology, legal formats including briefs, motions, subpoenas, recordkeeping systems and local and state courts.
    • One to three years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
    • A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
    • Prior public sector experience is a plus.

    • Ability to be flexible and adaptable including a willingness to learn new things.
    • Ability to handle confidential issues in a professional manner.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including but not limited to Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, Forms, including Adobe Acrobat.

    Employee Benefits

    The City of Long Beach offers its employees opportunities to grow personally and professionally.As a permanent employee, you are eligible to receive fringe benefits that include:

    • Retirement: California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) defined benefit retirement plan, which is coordinated with Social Security. The benefit is 2.5% @55 for "Classic" members and 2%@62 for new members as defined by PEPRA. Subject to employee contribution. Both the City and the employee contributes toward CalPERS retirement contributions. The city also participates in Social Security.
    • Health and Dental Insurance: The City offers the choice of HMO and PPO plans. The city pays major portion of the premium for employee and dependents depending on the health/ dental plan selected.
    • Life Insurance: City-paid term life insurance policy equal to three (3) times annual salary to a maximum of $500,000.
    • Disability Insurance: City-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance.
    • Management Physical: Annual City-paid physical examination.
    • Vacation: Twelve (12) vacation days after the first year of service; 15 days after four years, six months of service; 20 days after 19 years, six months of service.
    • Executive Leave: Forty (40) hours Executive Leave per year. The City Manager has discretion to grant an additional 40 hours each year.
    • Sick Leave: One day earned per month; unlimited accumulation; conversion upon retirement to cash credit toward health and/or dental insurance premiums, or to pension credits.
    • Holidays: Eleven (11) designated holidays per year, plus four personal holidays to be used at the employee's discretion.
    • Transportation Allowance: $450 per month.
    • Deferred Compensation Plan: Optional for employee contribution to a supplementary retirement savings program available through Mission Square Retirement formerly ICMA-RC Retirement Corporation). City contributes 1% of employee's base pay to the employee's 401(a) plan; effective September 30, 2022, the City will contribute 2% of employee's base pay to the employee's 401(a) account. Employees may opt to contribute up to the IRS annual limits as well.
    • Flexible Spending Account (FSA): Optional election for employees to reduce taxable income for payment of allowable childcare or medical expenses.
    • Flexible/Hybrid Work Schedule: Available (subject to City Manager approval).
    • Paid Parental Leave: After six (6) months of City employment; up to 30 calendar days (160 hours) of PPL, taken in full-day increments, in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child, up to the age of seventeen (17).
