    The Position

    Irvine Ranch Water District is accepting applications for a Temporary Student Intern in the Inorganic Chemistry section within the Water Quality department. Under supervision, the successful candidate will work directly with professional and technical staff performing a variety of analytical tasks and support work. The Temporary Student Intern will perform meaningful, productive, and challenging work by making significant contribution to projects, research, or other primary District functions. Temporary Student Interns will receive hands on training emphasizing teamwork, independence, and development of technical skills within a quality framework.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Student Intern(s) must be actively enrolled as a student in an institution of higher learning at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Student Intern is temporary job classification requiring enrollment in a minimum of 12 units of school study.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Under supervision, analyze various water, wastewater and/or biosolids samples for general physical analyses (color, turbidity), as well as other parameters as needed.
    • Accurately enter data results into the lab's Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
    • Assist with chemical reagent and standard preparation, as needed.
    • Assist with chemical standard preparation, as needed.
    • Learn and follow all laboratory safety protocols.
    • Learn and follow general laboratory and analysis-specific Quality Assurance/Quality Control protocols.
    • Compile, organize and interpret data.
    • Prepare documents, memos and other correspondence necessary for project completion.
    • Work part-time during the school year, and full-time during summer breaks.
    • Comply with District safety work-related practices and attend relevant safety training.
    • Attend district-wide meetings as required.

    Minimum Education, Training and Experience

    Education:
    • At the time of appointment, active enrollment as a student in an institution of higher learning, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, is required.
    • Completion of chemistry and laboratory college level courses required.


    Knowledge and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of research methods and data collection techniques including statistical methods, English usage, grammar, punctuation, report writing techniques and intermediate to advanced level skill in Microsoft Office Suite required.
    • Ability to work part-time during the school year, and full-time (up to 30 hours) during summer breaks.
    • Knowledge of laboratory techniques.

    License:
    • A valid California Class 'C' driver's license is required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Must possess mobility to work in a laboratory and standard office setting and use laboratory instruments and standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials, laboratory instruments, and a computer screen; color vision to read and interpret laboratory results; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone; ability to stand and walk between work areas is required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate laboratory instruments and standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    Employees work primarily in a laboratory environment with moderate to excessive noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and exposure to dust, fumes and/or allergens, biologic/infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, and unpleasant odors. Employees also work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
