    The City of Menlo Park is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier business and residential communities. We’re currently seeking a responsible individual to help enforce local and State parking regulations, as well as local and State ordinances related to municipal code violations and other non-criminal matters.

    This is a civilian classification established for the handling of a variety of public service functions in the Parking Enforcement Division of the Police Department, with the main focus being overnight parking enforcement.

    Ideal Candidate

    The specific duties of a Parking Enforcement Officer include issuing parking citations using an automated citation machine; maintaining department records & files; providing information and assistance to the public; operating radio and communications equipment; and attending in-service and external training programs.

    The ideal candidate will be able to work independently, have good written and communication skills, be in good physical condition, have normal color vision, and possess a valid CA Driver's License. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment, and be able to pass a background investigation and psychological & medical examinations prior to appointment.     Knowledge of
    • Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of providing parking enforcement and traffic control
    • Functions, principles, and practices of law enforcement agencies
    • Local, state, and federal law enforcement databases
    • City geography, maps, streets, landmarks, and driving directions
    • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility
    • Safety practices and equipment related to the work
    • Principles of record keeping
    • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work
    • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation
    • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff

    Ability to
    • Independently perform non-sworn parking enforcement program support duties
    • Obtain pertinent information from individuals in stressful or emergency situations
    • Assess situations and identify pertinent problems/issues; collect relevant information; evaluate realistic options; recommend and implement appropriate course of action
    • Memorize codes, names, street locations, and other information
    • Read and interpret maps and other pertinent documentation
    • Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations
    • Compile and summarize information and prepare accurate, clear, and concise reports, records, and other correspondence and documents
    • Organize, maintain, and update office database and records systems
    • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines
    • Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs
    • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines
    • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

    Education and Experience

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
    • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade
    • One (1) year of experience performing increasingly responsible non-sworn law enforcement support duties

    • A City-paid BayPass. This pilot program offers employees unlimited travel in 2024 - 2025 for both work and personal trips on 25 Bay Area transit agencies that use the Clipper card.
    • A transportation allowance program provides employees with $1.50 per day when they walk, bicycle or carpool to work at least once per week.

    Tentative Interview Dates:
    • The most qualified candidates will be invited to an in-person Oral Board Panel examination tentatively scheduled for the week of December 9, 2024.
    • If you are successful during the Oral Board panel examination, the Chief's interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of December 16, 2024.


    An Eligible List will be established as a result of this examination process and will be valid for a period of six (6) months. The list may be extended up to a maximum of two (2) years. The hiring department will review the Eligible List to determine which candidates will be invited to the department selection process.

    Menlo Park was founded November 23, 1927, as a general law city under the State of California and operates under the council-manager form of government.     City Council


    The City Council is the City's five-member governing body whose members serve at-large for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The City Council selects from among its members, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem to one-year terms at its first meeting in December of each year. The Mayor, who represents the City of Menlo Park, serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and signs enacting ordinances and contracts. The Menlo Park City Council meetings are generally Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers located at 701 Laurel Street.
