    DEFINITION:
    Performs a variety of tasks requiring arduous manual labor in the prevention, suppression and control of watershed, brush, and forest fires.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
    Positions allocable to this class are supervised by professional Fire Fighter personnel and are assigned to Fire Suppression Camps located in watershed areas and typically serve as members of air attack helicopter crews. Incumbents in this classification clear firebreaks, trails, and motorways; maintain and repair fire control facilities; and perform other fire control or prevention activities, as assigned. Incumbents must exercise working knowledge of fire suppression tools and techniques.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Clears firebreaks, trails, and motorways by cutting back brush or trees with chainsaws and hand tools, under fire emergency and precautionary conditions; also participates in other preventive measures, such as prescribed burns.
    • Assists engine companies in laying hose lines used to suppress wildland fires; patrols areas of controlled fires to discover and extinguish any remaining burning material.
    • Provides manual labor in other types of emergencies, such as filling and placing sandbags, or digging canals; demolishes structures after earthquakes; or assists Urban Search and Rescue teams, as necessary.
    • Performs various support duties, such as clerical tasks, small equipment repair and maintenance, sewing, moving furniture, assisting with special departmental events, washing helicopters, or other vehicle maintenance duties.
    • Drives automotive equipment in the performance of duties.


    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Graduation from high school or its equivalent, or higher from an accredited* college or university.**

    Successful completion of the mandatory department sponsored in-service training program is required prior to final appointment.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is requiredat time of hiring.***
    A valid California Class C Driver License with Firefighter endorsement, tank endorsement, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions is required within twelve months from the date of completing the training academy.

    A valid California Class A or Commercial Class B Driver License with Fire endorsement, tank endorsement, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions may be required for some positions in this class.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    Physical Requirements:
    Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

    VISION:
    (1) Acuity: At least 20/100 in each eye without correction, correctable to 20/40 in each eye. Successful soft contact lens wearers are not required to meet the uncorrected standard, as long as their corrected vision is 20/40 in each eye.

    (2) Color Vision Requirements: Anything worse than moderate hue impairment or monochromatic vision resulting in the inability to use thermal imaging cameras would require restriction.

    HEARING:
    On audiometric testing, average hearing deficit in the better ear may not be worse than 40 dB at test frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz without the aid of a hearing assistance device.

    In the case of a questionable, unusual, or borderline hearing deficit, the applicant will require additional functional hearing evaluation by a specialty consultant in otolaryngology engaged by one of the County’s contracted occupational health clinics. The specialist will issue findings to the contracted occupational health clinician so that they, in turn, can make the final recommendations as to an applicant’s restrictions, if any.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    * Accreditation: Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national, or international accrediting agencies, which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) .

    ** Educational requirement:
    Applicants for this position must include a legible copy of their official diploma, transcripts, or a letter from the accredited institution at the time of filing or within fifteen (15) calendar days of filing. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.

    *** License: Candidates offered the position will be required to show proof of a California Driver License before appointment and will be required to obtain a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles (and any other state in which the candidate has held a driver license during the preceding 5 years) before being appointed. License must be not be suspended, restricted or revoked.

    AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR (4) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT :
    This examination will consist of TWO (2) parts:

    Part I: A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100% assessing:

    Candidates must achieve a score of 70% or higher on Part I to proceed to Part II.
    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    Part II :
    Candidates will be required to take and pass a physical agility test (BEEP). The BEEP test is a multi-stage fitness test used to estimate a candidate's maximum oxygen uptake.

    NOTE : The BEEP test is a pass or fail test and is only valid for one (1) year after the candidate passes the test. If the candidate's BEEP results expire prior to being hired, they must take the BEEP test again.

    CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I AND PASS PART II TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

    TRANSFER OF SCORES:
    Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their scores automatically transferred to this examination. This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test scores may be transferred.

    Study guides and other test preparation resources are available to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides will help you prepare for the test, we advise to review all related materials that you deem necessary.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    VACANCY INFORMATION:
    The resulting eligible list for this examination will be used to fill Fire Suppression Aid vacancies within the County of Los Angeles Fire Department, as they occur.

    BACKGROUND CHECK AND MEDICAL INFORMATION:
    The County of Los Angeles is a Fair Chance Employer.
