    The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating , and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.     Position Duties

    Duration of Assignment:
    Approximately 12 weeks starting February 2025.

    Salary Information:
    The Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the Communications Division.

    Salary ranges for this classification are:

    • Undergraduate Student Intern: $15.17 - $21.66 per hour (unbenefited)


    • Graduate Student Intern: $19.62 - 28.98 per hour (unbenefited)


    These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    Internship Project Plan: Warehouse Inventory Worker Internship

    Duration: 12 Weeks

    Objectives:

    1. Gain an understanding of warehouse operations and inventory management.

    2. Identify , assist , and implement improvements in inventory accuracy and efficiency.

    3. Complete a capstone project to optimize inventory management operations.

    Weekly Breakdown:

    Week 1-2: Orientation and training

    • Introduction : Team overview, warehouse safety training, and introductions.

    • Training : Basic warehouse operations, and inventory management systems (Microsoft

    Outlook, Infor, Asana).

    • Objective : Understand the current inventory processes and warehouse layout.

    Week 3: Barcode/RFID scanning

    • Training : Familiarize with the use of RFID technology

    • Objective : Ability to implement barcode scanning to conduct cycle counting

    Week 4-5: Asset management

    • Activity : Conduct cycle counts on asset-tagged equipment.

    • Objective : Identify locations on all assets both physical and systematic.

    Week 6-8: Prep equipment for disposition

    • Activity : Prep specific assets for surplus and E-waste

    • Objective : Repurpose and dispose of assets that are no longer needed

    Week 9-10: Cycle counting parts.

    • Activity : Cycle count stock levels

    • Objective : Identify stock levels and end-of-life items

    Week 11: Improvement Areas Identification

    • Activity : Discuss improvement of the work area and gather input.

    • Objective : Reorganize Stock Room areas to maximize workflow efficiency

    Week 12: Reflection and Feedback

    • Task : Discuss intern performance and accomplishments.

    • Objective : The intern will conduct a self-assessment to evaluate personal growth.

    The salary ranges for these classifications:

    Student Intern Salary Range - $15.27 - $21.66/hourly ( unbenefited )

    Graduate Student Intern Salary Range - $19.62 - 28.98/hourly ( unbenefited )

    Minimum Qualifications

    Undergraduate Student Intern : Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.
    Graduate Student Intern : Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university.
    Licenses & Certificates : Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

    Other Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

    • Analytical Thinking - Ability to comprehend basic information and data. Can identify patterns, trends, and root causes in inventory data.


    • Attention to Detail - Can spot discrepancies in inventory and identify potential issues. Ability to complete material handling tasks with minimal errors.


    • Pro blem Solving - Demonstrates a proactive approach to identifying and resolving processes. Adaptable to unexpected challenges in inventory discrepancies.


    • Organizational Skills - Keeps track of multiple tasks and responsibilities efficiently and project milestones. Effectively organizes data and files for easy access and reporting.


    • Technical Proficiency - Basic knowledge of Microsoft-based software . Open to using multiple applications simultaneously to support operational tasks effectively. Ability to use barcode scanners and RFID systems to track inventory.


    • Time Management - Manages workload effectively, prioritizing tasks to meet the 12-week project timeline. Balances short-term tasks with long-term project goals.


    Selection Process

    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to all the job specific questions.     Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
