Power Generation Mechanical Engineer, Principal

Position Description

Tacoma Power's Generation Section is looking for a Hydro Mechanical Engineer (Power Systems Engineer, Principal) to provide expert mechanical engineering services for capital and maintenance projects at its hydroelectric and fisheries facilities. This senior-level role will apply comprehensive knowledge in the operation, maintenance, repair, and enhancement of mechanical systems and equipment critical to Generation. As a Professional Engineer and subject matter expert, you will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of Tacoma Power's generating resources and fisheries operations, contributing to the organization’s mission of sustained resource availability and operational excellence.. This role will be filled at a Power Systems Engineer, PE Principal level ($143,312.00 - $201,801.60 Annually ).

This position supports the mission of the organization by ensuring continued availability of generating resources and fisheries operations.

Responsibilities Include:

• Serve as the designated Subject Matter Expert (SME) for hydro generator turbines and fish rearing mechanical systems.
• Provide operational recommendations for mechanical systems to enhance effectiveness and reduce risk.
• Remain abreast of Mechanical Systems in the field of Utility Power by interfacing and coordinating with peers throughout the region.
• Perform complex studies and develop engineering reports
• Review work of outside consultants and vendors
• Design, develop, and execute software modeling
• Ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements
• Participate on diverse working teams involved with the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of fish facilities and hydropower plants.
• Prepare, review, and stamp calculations, drawings, reports, etc., related to mechanical systems.
• Prepare specifications and other engineering documents to procure and install a wide variety and of mechanical equipment and systems.
• Provide support for the evaluation, selection, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and acceptance of project activities and equipment.
• Represent the City at shop inspections and factory acceptance tests related to mechanical systems.
• Coordinate and work with contractors and hydro project staff to repair and upgrade systems and equipment.
• Plan and direct mechanical equipment installation, disassembly, reassembly, and alignment.
• Provide operations & maintenance and asset management program recommendations for mechanical systems.
• Power plant mechanical equipment within the scope of this position includes but is not limited to utility-scale generators, hydroelectric turbines, balance-of-plant systems (e.g., air, oil, and water), large valves, gates, cranes, and hoists.
• Fisheries facilities mechanical equipment within the scope of this position includes but is not limited to motors, pumps, piping, valves, water-treatment systems (e.g., ozone, filtration, UV), and fish attraction and conveyance systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field. Mechanical Engineering preferred.

Minimum Experience*
5 years of experience in power engineering including 2 years as a licensed professional engineer working in the electrical power industry.

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements

• Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) preferred.
• Washington State Licensed Professional Engineer, or the ability to attain one within six months of hire.
• Washington State Driver's License.
