    Role

    Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the operation of transfer station equipment and in the operation, maintenance, and repair of county transfer station facilities and other county facilities.

    Major Duties, Responsibilities

    • Assists in the operation and maintenance of transfer stations.
    • Assists in the collection and disposal of waste tires and appliances..
    • Assists in construction and maintenance of other county facilities.
    • Serves as lead person in community cleanup operations.
    • Operates motor vehicles and equipment requiring a CDL; using equipment to perform various labor and repair work. Operates non-CDL equipment including loaders, backhoes and other assigned equipment.
    • Assists in abatement of hazard waste sites and assists in removal and disposal of debris from County right-of-way and other property.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:
    A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience.

    Additional Requirements:
    Must possess or obtain a valid Arizona Class A Commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement within 1 year of employment.
    Must possess or obtain EPA Section 608 Type 1 Certification within 6 months of employment.

    Knowledge of:
    • Operation and servicing of solid waste equipment.
    • Solid waste removal and disposal.
    • Basic math and daily transaction reconciliation.
    • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
    • Clerical office practices and procedures.
    • Research techniques and report writing.
    • Current Microsoft Office software.
    • Filing and recordkeeping.

    Skill in:
    • Customer Service
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Organization and adherence to detail.

    Ability to:
    • Operate equipment safely and efficiently with zero accidents.
    • Effectively perform manual labor under any type of weather conditions.
    • Handle cash and give change accurately.
    • Maintain accurate daily logs.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
    • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
    • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
    • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
    • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

    Work Environment:
    The work environment is associated with a field environment year-round in all weather conditions and includes exposure to loud noise, dangerous emergency situations, hazardous waste, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals.

    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, walk over rough, uneven, and/or rocky surfaces, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds with assistance.
