    Essential Job Functions

    A Safety Assistant is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:
    • Assists in developing safety directives, safe working procedures and instructions.
    • Assists in ensuring the Department's safety program is in compliance with Federal, State, and local rules, regulations, and procedures.
    • Assists supervisors in making recommendations for correction of unsafe work conditions or practices.
    • Conducts field inspections to ensure safe work practices are followed, monitors the safe condition of equipment and corrects the use of personal protective equipment.
    • Conducts field inspections to identify potential exposure to hazardous substances such as asbestos or lead requiring the use of a respirator or other personal protection devices.
    • Investigates and prepares reports on industrial and vehicle/equipment incidents and makes recommendations for their prevention.
    • Assists in conducting and coordinating safety training programs as necessary to protect employee health and safety.
    • Assists with all aspects of planning and implementation of the Departmental Illness and Injury Prevention Program.
    • Uses computerized systems to assist in maintaining statistical records, writing reports and preparing correspondence.
    • In the absence of the Safety Officer, represents the Department at meetings conducted by the County and other agencies including California Occupational Safety Administration (Cal/OSHA) hearings.


    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIIREMENTS:

    A bachelor's degree* from an accredited college with a specialization in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Physics, Biology, Chemistry or a closely related field.

    LICENSE:

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

    Physical Class III- Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Applications from persons with degrees from foreign universities will be accepted ONLY if evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or Association of International Credential Evaluation, Inc.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT :

    This examination consists of two (2) parts, weighted 100%.

    PART I: Multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s) weighted 50% measuring:

    Achievement, Responsibility, and Safety Orientation.

    MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS AND SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    PART II: An Evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E) weighted 50% assessing competencies gained in the following areas:
    • Possession of current professional certifications and/or trainings
    • Experience assisting in the implementation of a safety program or safety inspection recommendation
    • Experience in safety related activities
    • Experience conducting health and safety related presentations

    Applicants must meet the requirements and achieve 70% or higher on the combined score of Parts I and II in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    Transfer of Test Components:
    • Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their scores automatically transferred to this examination.
    • This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test scores may be transferred.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date the register is created.

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the register of eligible candidates accordingly.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:

    The County of Los Angeles is a Fair Chance employer.
