    The City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking a strategic and solutions-oriented leader to serve as University Deputy Director (UDD) of Public Safety at the University’s Central Office. Reporting to the University Executive Director of Public Safety, the selected senior security executive will serve as the principal advisor and deputy, providing visionary leadership to advance the department's strategic goals.

     As a senior security executive, the UDD will play a crucial role in leading public safety initiatives across CUNY’s 25 campuses, which serve approximately 225,000 students across New York City’s five boroughs. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the safety and security of the nation’s largest urban public university system.

  • Job Description

    University Deputy Director of Public Safety

     In collaboration with the University Executive Director of Public Safety, the UDD will proactively advance the University’s strategic public safety goals centered on enhancing community trust and accountability; utilizing the most current policies and best practices; delivering resources effectively and efficiently; and investing in the development of talent. 

    Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure public safety and security, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
    • Direct the coordination of emergency response teams in collaboration with law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services ensuring effective crisis response
    • Collaborate with the University Executive Director to advance CUNY’s public safety goals, focusing on enhancing community trust, accountability, and operational efficiency
    • Assist in managing over 1,000 sworn and non-sworn personnel, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous professional development within the department
    • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential threats.
    • Lead emergency management planning, readiness, and training operations across the University. 
  • Job Requirements

    To qualify, applicants should possess the following criteria:

    • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in police science, criminology, public administration, or related law enforcement discipline,
    • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible public safety, security, law enforcement, or military service, with at least 3 years at an executive level,
    • A valid New York State driver’s license, New York State Residency and United States Citizenship to comply with the New York State Peace Officer statue, and Comprehensive knowledge of New York State Penal and Criminal Procedural Law.
