The Department of
Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating , and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position DutiesSalary range(s) for this classification(s) are:
S tructure/Landscape Designer I : $99,612.24 - $126,038.64
Structure/Landscape Designer II : $112,934.64 - $142,986.48
This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.
The Department of Public Works is recruiting to fill two (2) Structure/Landscape Designer I/II positions within the City Facilities Architectural Services Division (CFAS).
- One position to be with an A rchitectural degree . Employee in this position will perform professional architectural work . The work will include moderate difficulty in support ing programming, evaluation, review, design, and construction administration for capital improvement projects (primarily remodels and Tenant Improvements of c ity - owned facilities , such as community centers, libraries , fire stations, C ity Hall, maintenance yards facilities, and Police buildings ).
- O ne position with a L andscape A rchitectur al degree. Employee in this position will perform professional landscape architectural work . The work will include moderate difficulty in support ing programming, evaluation, review, design, and construction administration for capital improvement projects (primarily parks, trails, streetscapes, and emergency housing crisis assistance ).
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Preparing site selection, development feasibility, site layout and design, vision exploration, site investigations and analysis, and summary reports using desktop publishing software programs.
- Consulting with public and private consultants, contractors, and owners relative to the construction and maintenance of mun icipal/ public city-owned facilities as assigned.
- Preparing, writing, and administering consultant agreements.
- Developing schematic and preliminary site and landscape design concepts.
- Writing reports and Council memos for City projects.
- Participating in coordinating a full range of project management activities.
- Consulting with architects, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, developers, community groups and other City departments about the design and construction of municipal /public city- owned projects .
- Coordinating with other public agencies in the preparation of technical reports, plans and specifications, public meetings, and other duties related to the full range of project management activities.
- Preparing and writing technical reports, grant applications, agreements, joint use agreements , and strategic plans requiring research under the direction of a supervisor.
- Organizing, managing , and facilitating meetings with community groups and citizen organizations.
- Preparing and/or reviewing plans and specifications; preparing bidding documents; soliciting bids; awarding contracts; administering the contracts; interpreting plans and specifications; resolving field problems; managing construction contracts; and, following through with acceptance of project.
- Presenting project details and discussing with community groups and citizen organizations.
- Providing analysis, project schedules, and cost estimates of construction.
- Preparing designs, plans and specifications for conformance to established standards and directing the inspections of facilities under construction or repair using computer-aided design and drafting software programs.
- Performing other duties of a similar nature or level.

Minimum QualificationsEducation: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in the field of Landscape Architecture, Architecture or a closely related field
Experience :
Structure/Landscape Designer I : None.
Structure/Landscape Designer II : One (1) year of increasingly responsible professional experience at a level equivalent to Structure/Landscape Designer with the City of San Jos é .
Acceptable substitution : Acceptance by the State of California for professional registration testing may be substituted for the degree requirement. Proof of acceptance must be provided at the time of application.
Licensing Requirements : Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required .
Other QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:
Job Expertise - demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations.
- Experience in the delivery of site development and landscape architectural design projects, with public sector experience is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture .
- Ability to perform varied computer aided drafting and desktop publishing assignments using programs such as AutoCAD.
- Ability to perform analysis for code compliance.
- Ability to prepare master and detailed plans, construction specifications and cost estimates, sketches and color renderings.
- Ability to perform research work and prepare technical reports.
Communication Skills - Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills; displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.
