    DUTIES

    ANNUAL SALARY

    $49,673 to $72,599

    NOTE :

    Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.

    Under the direct supervision of a licensed health care provider, a Medical Assistant provides assistance to physicians and nurses in the health screening and physical examination of applicants, City employees, and arrestees/prisoners; and performs related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

    • Completion of a medical assistant program from an accredited technical school. The program must include training in medical terminology and front and/or back office clinic operations; and
    • A current, valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR card.


    PROCESS NOTES

    Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).
    For Requirement #1, applicants must submit a copy of their certificate of completion of a medical assistant program from an accredited school at the time of filing. The copy of the certificate of completion of a medical assistant program from an accredited school must be attached to the on-line application in the Attachments section BEFORE the application is submitted. If the copy of the certificate of completion of a medical assistant program from an accredited school is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted it, and WILL NOT be considered further in this examination.
    For Requirement #2, applicants must list the expiration date of their CPR card in the Supplemental Questions section.
    Applicants must submit a copy of their CPR card at the time of filing. The copy of the CPR card must be attached to the on-line application in the Attachments section BEFORE the application is submitted. If the CPR card is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted it, and WILL NOT be considered further in this examination.
    Please note that qualifying education must be from a secondary, post-secondary, or adult education program in a public school authorized by the Department of Education at https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ or https://otan.us/Resources/Home/ProviderDirectory ; in a community college program, or in a post-secondary institution accredited by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs at https://www.bppe.ca.gov/ ; or in a post-secondary medical assistant school accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) at https://www.caahep.org/students/find-an-accredited-program or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) at https://abhes.org/ .
    A valid certification as a qualified medical assistant issued by a Medical Board of California approved medical assistant certifying organization is desired.

    In accordance with Civil Service Rule 4.2, all applicants who apply may not be tested in this examination. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles who meet the minimum requirements, or are on a reserve list. 2) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

    SELECTION PROCESS

    Examination Weight : Recorded Interview and Training and Experience Questionnaire . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .100%

    The examination will consist of an evaluation of personal and professional qualifications by recorded interview and Training and Experience Questionnaire (T&E). In the recorded interview and T&E, the following competencies may be evaluated: Attention to Detail; Conscientiousness; Customer Service; Teamwork; Follow Oral Directions; Knowledge, including the knowledge of general medical terminology and abbreviations; medical laboratory tests, common diagnostic tests, biometric measurements, and the procedures, materials and/or equipment required to perform such tests and/or measurements; procedures, equipment, and supplies required to ensure sanitary, sterile and clean conditions of laboratory, medical supplies, patient examining areas, and equipment; various vaccines and the proper location on the patient’s body for injection; Federal and State laws and regulations related to patient confidentiality, respiratory protection, and immunizations as required by HIPPA and Cal-OSHA; and other necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.

    The recorded interview will be administered on-line using a web-based interviewing platform. Candidates will be able to complete the recorded interview as instructed from a remote location on an electronic device with a webcam or front facing camera (i.e., computer, mobile device, tablet, etc.) with a reliable internet connection. Candidates invited to participate will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps on how to complete the recorded interview. It is anticipated that the candidates invited to participate in the recorded interviews will be required to complete the interview between MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2025 and MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2025 . Candidates who do not complete and submit the recorded interview on-line using an electronic device by the specified date and time as instructed will not be considered further in this examination.

    Candidates must complete the recorded interview in order to be invited to complete the Training and Experience Questionnaire. The Training and Experience Questionnaire will be administered on-line. Candidates invited to complete the Training and Experience Questionnaire will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps on how to complete the on-line Training and Experience Questionnaire, and will be required to do so by the date provided in the instructions sent to them via e-mail. Candidates that do not complete the on-line Training and Experience Questionnaire as required will not be considered further in this examination. It is anticipated that the on-line Training and Experience Questionnaire will be administered during the period of FEBRUARY 3, 2025 to FEBRUARY 10, 2025 .

    The recorded interviews and Training and Experience Questionnaires for all candidates who meet the requirements, and in accordance with Civil Service Rule 4.2 as stated above, will be submitted to an expert review panel for evaluation. The expert review panel will assign a numeric score to each candidate based on an assessment of each candidate’s qualifications, as described in the recorded interview and on the candidate’s Training and Experience Questionnaire. Unsolicited supplemental information will not be submitted to the expert review panel.

    NOTES :

    This examination is based on a validation study, and as provided by Civil Service Commission Rule 4.20, the Training and Experience Questionnaire will not be subject to candidate inspection.
