    Chancellor's Office Statement

    Join our team at the California State University, Office of the Chancellor, and make a difference in providing access to higher education. We are currently seeking experienced candidates for the position of Assistant Editor/Web Writer. The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. The CSU Chancellor's Office offers a premium benefit package that includes outstanding vacation, health, and dental plans; a fee waiver education program; membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS); and 15 paid holidays a year.

    Salary

    The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $2,600 per month ($5,200 full-time equivalent per month), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    This position is part-time, temporary (20 hours a week) with benefits.

    This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person as applicable)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.

    Public Affairs/Communications Specialist I

    Position Information

    The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Assistant Editor/Web Writer to perform temporary duties and provide writing and editing, research and administrative support to the Integrated Internal Communications (IIC) department. The incumbent provides valuable assistance in keeping critical web pages up to date, and in helping to maximize the production and effectiveness of the IIC department operations.

    Collaborating closely with members of the IIC team and the larger Strategic Communications and Brand Marketing (SCBM) Department, the Editorial Assistant/Web Editor maintains consistency and timeliness among key web pages, while ensuring alignment with the CSU brand. The incumbent also helps to manage the department’s editorial calendar and ensure that it stays in alignment with the SCBM master calendar and with the Chancellor’s Office’s overall priority messages. Furthermore, the incumbent helps to monitor analytics and ensure that written communications are reaching stated engagement goals.

    Throughout the work of this position, the incumbent oversees the highest standards of accuracy, consistency and appropriateness in all approved editorial communications, and provides a necessary quality control function to protect the image of the California State University.

    Responsibilities

    Under the general direction of the Interim Senior Director, Integrated Internal Communications, the Assistant Editor/Web Writer will:

    -Assist in effort to identify old and inaccurate information and broken links on CSU communications pages and identify source material for updating.

    -Monitor engagement trends for CSU news stories and organize analytics and engagement data.

    -Maintain updated department editorial calendar, and provide updates to master Strategic Communications and Brand Marketing calendar.

    -Maintain campus listservs for internal communications and feature writers.

    -Monitor and refresh Chancellor’s Communications and highlights pages.

    -Assist in sourcing photos for stories from employees as well as external sources (including campus photographers).

    -Assist in identifying and composing biographies or executive pages that need updates or additions.

    -Order and renew materials and keep track of travel/department charges as necessary.

    -Maintain appropriate AP style in all web writing and updates.

    Qualifications

    This position requires:

    -Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, creative writing, communications, marketing or a related area or the equivalent combination of education and related professional experience.

    -1 year’s experience writing and editing for web, print, mobile and/or social media.

    -1 year’s experience working with or managing an editorial calendar or other editorial processes (e.g., fact-checking, copyediting, proofreading, trafficking of copy).

    -Basic familiarity with photo editing (Photoshop or other tools), analytics (Google Analytics or other tools).

    -First-rate attention to accuracy and detail in all writing and editing; this role requires a deep familiarity with the Chancellor’s Office style guide and Associated Press style and a commitment to raising the bar in all we do. This role requires extraordinary attention to detail.

    -Ability to forge relationships within the CSU system (Chancellor’s Office, campus faculty and staff) to source compelling, timely ideas and find appropriate CSU experts to interview.

    -Ability to think visually about content. Text is very important, but photography, video and social media are just as essential in telling the CSU story in ways that engage our multiple audiences.

    -Strong time management and organizational skills with a proven ability to work on multiple projects with competing priorities on tight timelines.

    -Self-motivated with the ability to anticipate needs and a strong desire to learn new platforms and new ways of telling stories.

    -Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment and provide support to team members.

    -Adaptability to changing and sometimes competing priorities and the ability to bounce back from constructive criticism to continue improving.

    -Sound judgement in working with stakeholders at all levels.

    -Sincere and abiding curiosity.

    -An interest in higher education and student success.

    Preferred Qualifications

    -Experience in higher education.

    -Experience with SharePoint.
