    Upon hire, Cal Poly Humboldt will pay a successful applicant full-time wages plus benefits while completing the basic academy and cover direct academy expenses that remain unpaid at the time of hire.

    This is a full-time, 12 month pay plan temporary position in the University Police Department. This position comes with a premium benefits package that includes outstanding vacation, medical, dental, and vision plans, life insurance, voluntary pre-tax health and dependent care reimbursement accounts, a fee waiver education program, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and 14 paid holidays per year, as the appointment will be for at least six months and one day.     Position Summary:

    The Cal Poly Humboldt University Police Department (UPD) is seeking applicants for a police officer cadet. The applicant may be a current Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy student or be hired to attend a future academy session. UPD’s mission is to promote a safe and secure learning environment by working cooperatively with the campus community to enforce the laws, preserve the peace, maintain order, and provide exceptional professional services to our campus community. Under the supervision of a sworn peace officer, the primary responsibility of a cadet is to complete the prescribed basic police academy to learn principles, practices, and theory of law enforcement. The Cadet also will receive fundamental training in report writing, physical fitness, firearms, and arrest and control techniques. Cadets must complete a P.O.S.T. certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Upon successful completion of the academy training the cadet may be appointed, at the Chief’s discretion, to the classification of probationary police officer. Under close supervision, the cadet may assist UPD police officers, as directed, in the performance of their duties.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
    • Ability to qualify for and satisfactorily meet the ongoing standards of the basic P.O.S.T. academy training.
    • Mental capacity, physical agility and learning potential to perform all aspects of P.O.S.T. training and police work.
    • Ability to work and associate with a diverse community in an effective, professional and courteous manner.
    • Ability to learn criminal laws, general knowledge of crime prevention and investigation, and first aid.
    • Capacity to communicate with people with different perspectives, make reasoned decisions, and apply academy knowledge in a field training program in accordance with UPD policy and procedure.
    • Dedication to principles of Community Policing.
    • A diligent work ethic, mental and emotional maturity, and dedication to professionalism.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent and eligibility to attend a certified P.O.S.T. basic training academy.
    • Successful completion of each block of academy training
    • A minimum of 21 years of age

    Licenses, Certificates, Degrees, Credentials:
    • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
    • Eligible to obtain a valid P.O.S.T.
    • Certificate of Eligibility or possess a P.O.S.T.
    • Basic Certificate in good standing.
    • Valid California driver’s license.

    • a written test measuring reading and writing abilities (successful completion of the PelletB necessary to enter the academy may be used to satisfy the written test requirement)
    • a physical agility exam (successful completion of P.O.S.T.’s physical agility test during the academy may satisfy the physical agility exam)
    • a panel interview
    • a comprehensive medical examination (a drug test will be administered as part of the required medical examination)
    • a psychological evaluation
    • a polygraph
    • a thorough background investigation
