    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Development Services Department's Building Code Compliance Section is seeking a Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Compliance Officer.

    This position is responsible for ensuring adherence to traffic control regulations and safety standards in designated areas. It involves monitoring and enforcing compliance with local traffic control codes, ordinances and safety guidelines during special events, construction projects and other activities that may impact traffic flow. Employees may receive advice or assistance from a superior/supervisor concerning unusual or difficult inspections; however, most field work is done independently and requires knowledge of applicable regulations.

    In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning essential duties not listed herein if such duties relate to the position.

    • Conduct site assessments and inspection for compliance with development traffic management plan.
    • Responsible for supervising the installation, removal and field maintenance of temporary traffic control devices, including temporary barriers, end treatments and crash cushions Collaborate with contractors and local authorities to mitigate traffic safety hazards.
    • Provide guidance on proper traffic control measures and issue citations for violations as necessary.
    • Strong communication skills are essential for educating the public and stakeholders about traffic regulations and for reporting findings to management.
    • Conducts reactive (complaints) and proactive (self-initiated) field and waterway inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant parcel
    • Enforces and reviews state, municipal, regulations
    • Prepares, organizes and maintains case files to present cases and testifies at quasi-judicial hearings
    • Research information regarding policies, laws, regulations, engineering, environmental, and permits requirements
    • Research ownership of various residential, commercial, industrial, and vacant properties within the City
    • Provides code compliance information to address client issues and educate concerned parties
    • Attends homeowner and civic association meetings
    • Posts and mails hearing and violation notices
    • Compiles and prepares written reports on investigations, maintains all inspection results, prepares correspondence and notices of violations in a computerized case management environment
    • Identifies traffic control setup that may be unsafe and initiates the appropriate follow-up action
    • May be required to flex their work schedule, work nights and weekends and holidays, as necessary to perform assigned responsibilities
    • Performs related work as required


    JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

    High School Diploma or equivalentPossess a Florida Department of Transportation "Approved Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Advance Course Certification".A minimum of two (2) years of paid work experience dealing with the public in any of the following types of work: code enforcement, planning, building inspection or construction or other closely related fields; OR Possess one of the following Certifications from F.A.C.E. (Florida Association of Code Enforcement): Fundamentals of Code Enforcement; Administrative Aspects of Code Enforcement; Legal Issues in Code Enforcement; Officer Safety and Field Applications;Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days of appointment. Preferences:
    Typing speed of 40 words per minute accurately

    PLEASE NOTE:
    • Code Compliance officers need to possess/obtain their F.A.C.E. (Florida Association of Code Enforcement) Certification: Fundamentals of Code Enforcement, within (1) one year of hire date and maintain this certification during their employment with the City in this classification.
    • Driver's license must be kept current and in good standing to continue employment in this class.
    • Ideal candidates should possess knowledge of traffic management principles, relevant laws, and have experience in enforcement or regulatory roles.
    • Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and the capability to work in various outdoor environments are crucial for success in this position.
    • As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Head.


    HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION

    Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.

    An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form ( J-204) .
