  • Job Description

    The Missouri State Public Defender System (MSPD) is looking for dedicated Indigency Application Determiners to join our team on a part-time basis. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the fair administration of justice by supporting those in need. MSPD will maintain a small pool of available individuals to assist local offices as needed in reviewing applications for public defender services and determining eligibility.

    • Application Processing

      • Handle new applications for public defender services, ensuring all required questions are answered and applications are complete.
      • Ensure all applications contain complete information and meet the specified guidelines set forth by MSPD.


      Client Interaction

      • Review and process applications, conducting interviews as necessary to gather additional information and clarify applicant financial statuses.


      Indigence Determination

      • Analyze income and financial data to make accurate indigence determinations, ensuring compliance with audit recommendations.


      Coordination with Courts

      • Communicate with local courts, providing necessary information and documentation for eligibility determinations.


      Special Cases

      • Handle unique situations such as applications submitted by individuals other than the defendant and cases involving probation violations.


      Support

      • Assist with verifying income and unemployment status through online resources, ensuring all information is accurate and up-to-date.


    • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse clientele.
    • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
    • Ability to work independently.


    • Meaningful Work : Contribute to the fair administration of justice and support individuals who cannot afford legal representation.
    • Hours : Enjoy a part-time schedule, with work that can be performed during normal business hours. Anticipate an average of 10-15 hours per week.
    • Professional Development : Gain experience in the legal field and enhance your administrative and analytical skills.
    • Location : Position may be based out of any MSPD office statewide, with the option for remote work available.
