    The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is seeking motivated student s or recent graduate s eager to gain practical experience and create valuable connections in the field of government and public affairs. As intern s in the Government and Public Affairs Division , you will be an integral part of our team, supporting our organization through various administrative and technical tasks such as maintaining internal elected official databas es and assisting in developing strategic communication s . From conducting in-depth research to crafting compelling reports and delivering impactful presentations, you will have the chance to make a n impact within the Southern California region .     SALARY

    Interns’ salary will depend on their in-progress or highest completed degree:

    • Interns working toward or who possess a Bachelor’s degree will start at $21 per hour


    • Interns working toward or who possess a Master’s degree will start at $24 per hour


    SCAG is seeking two interns in the Government and Public Affairs Division, supporting our Government Affairs and Media and Public Affairs departments.

    Government Affairs (1 Position Available)

    SCAG’s Government Affairs department serves as the primary liaison to the SCAG region . The department represents the agency at public events and maintains trusted relationships with elected officials and important stakeholders . The department communicates and advocates for SCAG’s programs and coordinates with staff to support ongoing projects, workshops, and public outreach.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist with updating the Policy Committee and Regional Council Member database.


    • Assist with helping create, track, and update SCAG’s Regional Council Elections database.


    • Assist the lead government affairs officer with SCAG’s Scholarship Program.


    • Assist Legislative Affairs with SS4A Letters of Support.


    • Compile and disseminate the Government Affairs weekly report content.


    • Research and compile the regional elected official contact list database.


    • Assist the lead government affairs officer with Mobile Workshop planning and research.


    • Attend various external meetings and events with department staff.


    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Media and Public Affairs (1 Position Available)

    SCAG’s Media and Public Affairs Department performs many key functions for the agency, such as deploying strategic communications to further agency priorities and conveying the impact of SCAG’s work. The department aims to produce clear and consistent communications and media that exemplify agency values and standards and enhance SCAG’s reputation as a respected and influential voice for the region.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop and schedule emails for newsletters.


    • Research contacts and update the contact database.


    • Assist with developing content for various outreach channels for SCAG programs.


    • Assist with designing and presenting new social media campaign ideas.


    • Assist with creating content to be posted on the SCAG intranet.


    • Support the planning and hosting of signature events.


    • Measure and report on the results of communications and outreach efforts.


    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Internships will begin approximately mid- July and will be limited to a maximum of 29 hours a week for the duration of the internship ( 750 hours). Interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week.

    In this role you can expect to

    • Perform a wide variety of administrative and technical assignments to assist departments or sections and to receive on-the-job exposure to various government issues; depending on assigned work area, learn to perform various administrative, planning, analytical, and financial tasks.


    • Research, write, and present reports and recommendations on a variety of government topics; participate in conducting studies and analyses involving assigned programs and functions concerning policies, practices, procedures, financial resources, facilities, proposals, staffing, new programs and projects, effectiveness of programs, and planning.


    • Collect, compile, describe, organize, analyze, interpret, and present data and information related to area and issues under study.


    • Assist in the coordination of data and materials for the department or section; consult with businesses, citizens, SCAG personnel, consultants, governmental agencies, and associations to obtain and distribute information and data.


    • Perform a variety of clerical or technical tasks in support of SCAG programs; answer phones and assist the public; maintain a variety of records.


    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    What you'll bring to this role

    An undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in a university or community college taking classes toward a Communications, English, Government, Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Affairs, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism degree or other related fields , or who has graduated within the previous 12 months.

    We’ll be a good match if you have:

    • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines.


    • Knowledge of state and federal legislative organization, operations, processes, and procedures, including legislative publications and principles of legislative record keeping.


    • Familiarity with journalism principles, including standard format, AP style rules, grammar, and spelling, as well as editorial styles and English composition.


    • Proficiency in letter-writing and communication principles, practices, methods, and techniques, including marketing and media principles and concepts, public relations, media advocacy, and community affairs.


    • Understanding of project management principles and practices, including research and report preparation methods and procedures.


    • Proficiency in using software such as Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, MailChimp, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM).


    • Knowledge of sources of information related to a broad range of outreach and communications programs and services.


    • Familiarity with modern office procedures, methods, computer software, and hardware, including basic principles and procedures of record keeping.


    • Basic knowledge of mathematics principles.


    • Proficiency in English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.

    Transit Reimbursement Program
    SCAG reimburses up to $230 per month for commute to the office via public transit via bus, rail, or train. Employees must commute a minimum of 8 days per month in order to receive reimbursement for monthly passes.

    Flexible Time/Modified Work Week/Telework
    SCAG offers a flexible work schedule to allow employees some flexibility on daily work hours. SCAG has developed a hybrid workforce program called Work@SCAG to provide two work model options (office and hybrid) to choose from, based on their position, within the SCAG Region.

    Technology Allowance
    Employees in hybrid and remote work models will receive a one-time stipend of $300 to be used for remote office setup. In addition, all employees receive a $140 monthly technology allowance to cover phone usage for business use and to offset utilities costs while working remotely.

    Founded in 1965, the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is a Joint Powers Authority under California state law, established as an association of local governments and agencies that voluntarily convene as a forum to address regional issues. Under federal law, SCAG is designated as a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and under state law as a Regional Transportation Planning Agency and a Council of Governments.

    The SCAG region encompasses six counties (Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura) and 191 cities in an area covering more than 38,000 square miles. The agency develops long-range regional transportation plans including sustainable communities strategy and growth forecast components, regional transportation improvement programs, regional housing needs allocations and a portion of the South Coast Air Quality management plans. In 1992, SCAG expanded its governing body, the Executive Committee, to a 70-member Regional Council to help accommodate new responsibilities mandated by the federal and state governments, as well as to provide more broad-based representation of Southern California’s cities and counties. With its expanded membership structure, SCAG created regional districts to provide for more diverse representation. The districts were formed with the intent to serve equal populations and communities of interest. Currently, the Regional Council consists of 86 members.

    In addition to the six counties and 191 cities that make up SCAG’s region, there are six County Transportation Commissions that hold the primary responsibility for programming and implementing transportation projects, programs and services in their respective counties. Additionally, SCAG Bylaws provide for representation of Native American tribes and Air Districts in the region on the Regional Council and Policy Committees.
