    CAREER DESCRIPTION

    PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE WORKER II
    SALARY INFORMATION
    Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

    This position is scheduled to receive a salary range increase on the following date:
    Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

    This recruitment is being held to establish an open to the public eligible list to fill current and future Public Works Maintenance Worker II positions within OC Public Works. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower-level classifications throughout the County of Orange.

    OC OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE
    OC Operations and Maintenance is a section within OC Public Works whose goal is to serve the citizens of Orange County by providing a safe environment and enhanced quality of life through improvements to and maintenance of public infrastructure. Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provides a wide range of planning, design, project management, construction, and maintenance services to Orange County's unincorporated areas, 380 miles of flood control channels, 4 dams, 8 pumping stations, 336 road miles, and other infrastructure. O&M provides public works services for contracted cities. O&M also plays a crucial role in responding to the needs of the public in the aftermath of devastating fire and storm events and other general emergencies.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The immediate vacancies are within the following area:

    EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS
    The Equipment Operations team provides construction and heavy equipment services in support of maintenance projects and emergency response efforts, such as storms and floods. The duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
    • Assistance with the maintenance of road and flood facilities
    • Performs repairs or replacements of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, cross gutters, and ADA ramps
    • Supports the activities in traffic control, road closures, and labor work during emergency situations when heavy winds, rain, or fire events occur
    • Operates and maintains a variety of hand, gas, and pneumatic tools, equipment, and a crew truck or light construction equipment

    While the immediate vacancies may be on the above team, this list may be used to fill related Public Works Maintenance Worker II positions within OC Public Works. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to, road stenciling, hand-patch asphalt, graffiti removal, vegetation trimming, trash or debris removal, sign installation and repair, and fencing, which includes pouring foundations, installing or repairing gates, and arc welding.

    GENERAL MAINTENANCE UNIT
    The General Maintenance Unit oversees general maintenance services on County properties such as right-of-way trimming, fence installation and repairs, trash and debris removal, pump station operation and maintenance, sign fabrication and installation, and welding. The job duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

    • Performs tasks associated with the clean-up of trash and debris in ditches, culverts, drains, firebreaks, and flood channels
    • Installs and repairs guard rails and protectives and right-of-way fencing
    • Performs rodent control tasks such as setting traps and placing poison grain
    • Operates a variety of hand and pneumatic tools and equipment

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES

    The successful candidate will demonstrate one (1) year of experience as a Public Works Maintenance Worker I with the County of Orange, or two (2) years of experience performing construction or related laboring duties requiring the use of hand and power tools, motors, engines, compressors, or pumps.

    In addition, the successful candidate will possess knowledge and experience in the following core competencies:

    Technical Knowledge & Experience
    • Experience performing construction or related laboring duties requiring the use of hand and power tools, motors, engines, compressors or pumps
    • Experience in the repair of concrete work
    • Experience operating maintenance equipment and tools such as power tools (gas, electric, battery), high-pressure equipment, towing/operating small trailers, and other related equipment and tools
    • Experience with traffic sign installation, repairs, and replacement, and understanding work order assignments and traffic control plans.
    • Experience in trimming, cutting, and the removal of trees, shrubs, and vegetation
    • Experience reading and understanding plans and specifications

    Safety Practices
    • General knowledge of safe work practices relating to the use of hand and power tools (gas, electric, battery), motors, engines, vehicle operations, compressors, and pumps
    • Follows strict guidelines and safety regulations
    • Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed
    • Knowledge of the proper material and equipment selection, traffic control, traffic safety rules, and utility protection required for working in a high-stress, high-traffic-volume environment
    Communication Skills
    • Effectively communicating with supervisors, co-workers, various public agencies, and the public
    • Following written & oral instructions and schedules
    • Working cooperatively with others
    • Maintaining accurate written documentation

    REQUIRED LICENSE
    Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C, before the date of appointment, is required for most assignments.


    RECRUITMENT PROCESS

    Human Resource Services (HRS) will screen all application materials to identify qualified applicants. After screening, qualified applicants will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition.

    Online Examination (Weighted 100%): Candidates whose work experience appears to best meet the needs of the department will be invited to participate in an examination covering job-related items. Only the candidates who receive the highest score on the assessment will be placed on an eligible list.

    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures above may be modified. Candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedures.

    Eligible List
    Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
